Naming a star

Contributor: wrecklesswords wrecklesswords
Has anyone here ever done this before?

I'm thinking about doing it for my dad for Christmas. He's kind of hard to pin for presents because he doesn't really ask for much, he's a simple man. It's $54 for the basic package on the website. He is into that thing and he and I used to look at the stars a lot when I was a little girl.

Good idea?

i learned about this in my astronomy class 2 yrs ago. you don't really get a star. i can't remember the exact details, but they give you a space in the sky & not really a star. either way, it was explained to make it sound like it's a scam. i wouldn't spend the money on it.

Though I've never taken astronomy, this is what I always believed.

They don't actually officially name the star, and it's not recognized by any astronomy association. If they did it would be a cool gift, and I'd say go for it. But you're basically just paying for the certificate that has the requested name and a star map. If you're just looking for something fun, and think the certificate and map is worth it, then sure. As long as you know it's just for fun. I personally wouldn't spend $54 on it. Sorry, that's just my personal opinion.

I've always felt that it was a bit of a scam, as Cakes has said. I wouldn't spend money on it, if it wasn't official.

I think this is one of those true instances where "it's the thought that counts".

Huh! I didn't know that! I was thinking so, though, after visiting several of the websites for it. They were low-quality and not... up-to-date with the times.

Thank you for letting me know!

If it's only 54 bucks, that could be a really cute idea.

I have one in my name, and the certificates that came with it were ugly and you could barely see anything on the map when it's hanging on the wall.
