Merry Christmas vs Merry Xmas

Contributor: Pandahb Pandahb 12/16/2011

I grew up learning that saying xmas was very bad and you were taking the christ out of the important religious holiday. But how do you feel on this issue?

It doesn't really matter. The X is an ancient abbreviation for Christ. Don't believe me? Look it up. link

I say "Christmas" but I frequently type or write "xmas." I was taught that this was an abreviation just like Mon. is an abreviation for Monday. I think it would be incorrect to make assumptions about people's beliefs based on the way people type or say xmas.

Christmas, I like to say or write it properly.

I say Happy Holidays to people because I don't assume everyone celebrates the majority's holiday, but refer to that particular holiday as x-mas. I find it amusing when people get bent out of shape about the abbreviation since christians started it. For me, it's all about saving space. Besides, x-mas was never a completely christian/religious holiday and has its roots in the winter holidays of several other cultures/religions.

The chance of me saying Xmas is directly related to how recently I've seen a futurama episode.

I say Christmas, mostly because 'Xmas' just sounds and looks really stupid to me

I use the word Christmas because it's the essence of what the holiday means to me individually-the birth of Christ. I do not in any way imply disrespect to others' beliefs by saying Merry Christmas to them; if they choose to say something else because they are Jewish, atheist, or whatever, that is fine. But I feel like this is still a free country and I should be allowed to say what I like.

I use Xmas when typing because it's shorter and I'm lazy.

I choose to say Christmas because that is what it is to me, but lately, I've typed "X-mas" because it's shorter and easier. I know, lazy, but I rarely do it! Lol.

I learned a long time ago that "Xmas" is actually a very old way of writing it.

Wikipedia says pretty much what I learned : LINK.

It actually goes back quite a bit in history and doesn't have anything to do with removing Christ from Christmas (though I can see how one might come to that conclusion if they didn't know the history).

I say Christmas. But, I have written Xmas as short hand and don't have a problem with it. In the Biblical Greek X is the letter Chi and stands for Christ. So simply putting Xmas is not taking the "Christ" out of Christmas at all.

^ words out of my mouth

On the same token, one of our clients wished their fans a "merry xmas" on Facebook and I had to tell them to remove it. Some people get offended, though they obviously shouldn't. But of course, they don't do their research.

It's the same freakin' holiday. X is an abbreviation of Christ, so there's absolutely no difference.

"Merry X-mas" is not less Christian than "Merry Christmas" because "X" is an abbreviation for Christ.

Anybody ever actually "hear" what the word xmas sounds like? It sounds like a skin condition ... "Merry ecsmas! Have a great skin condition!"

Now you'll never unsee that.

(I write out "Christmas" because I'm proper that way - I agree with Adriana that it looks unbalanced when shortened.)
