It's hard to feel those companies have womens' best interests at heart, even after profit, regardless of who is in charge, and they certainly don't care a flip for the environment. I choose not to support them where it is at all possible.
03/24/2012
It's a wierd situation though. I know they are man lead companies but so what, theymake a good product, and if the product was bad whether it be male or femaler I wouldn't buy it. It shouldn't matter if it is a male in a femal area or vice versa so long as the product is good.
03/24/2012
surprisingly this doesn't bother me so much...

Same here. Even if the company was owned by a woman, that doesn't mean they would do a good job of making a good tampon. I mean, what if the owner used pads? XD As long as they get people who actually use tampons to help come up with how to make the best product and listen to the consumer's needs, they should be fine.

I agree. I think things would be pretty much the same if a woman ran the companies, just the commercials might be a bit better.

It is ironic but I love my tampons they work for me. Like a previous person mentioned, it's not like men invented periods for profit. It's not like tampons suck they are made really well and are very comfortable
03/25/2012
It doesn't really bother me who runs the companies.
03/25/2012
Are you saying every tampon company is owned by a man? Aren't most of them corporations who are owned by shareholders?
To me, if the tampon works, it works. Once I find a brand that works for me, I only buy that brand until it becomes unavailable or stops working for me. I'm not going to be all sexist about my buying choices.

Yeah, I don't think "man owned" is a good reason to say "these companies might not have your best interests at heart."
There are plenty of reasons to think a company might not have your best interests at heart, though. If we're going to generalize, I'm going to say the bigger a company, the more concerned they are with profit margins than with product quality.
I haven't heard anything conclusive about health risks, but for example, most tampons are bleached white. This is for marketing, not because that's a great thing to be putting in your body.
I saved a ton (both in money, waste, and not having to put smelly things in the garbage) by switching to menstrual cups, but I don't think cups will have the kind of marketing power that tampon companies will.

That's kind of like saying that Playboy shouldn't be run by women. I have no issues with men owning feminine product companies.

I don't have anything against men. Some of my best friends are men. I like to fuck one particular man at least once a day, and have for years and years. I LIKE men.
No, it doesn't bother me that some tampon companies are "man owned." The products do what they are supposed to do, and I have to say that we have it better than when women used rags or those huge "Brick" pads with "Sanitary Belts" (I was just young enough to MISS having to do all that.) Most of the big companies are run by boards anyway, and I doubt they are ALL men sitting around trying to think of ways to hurt women. Most are offshoots of personal care product companies, many of which were founded in the 19th century.
Do you have an example of one that is 100% "man owned?" Would a "woman owned" condom company be necessarily bad?

I don't find it bad at all. I mean, if you're worried that they're after the money more than helping, a woman can be greedy just as a man can be.

Nope they just saw a need and filled the area (pun intended)! I can't wear tampons because my vagina is very short and they irritate me horribly. Cups fall out easily and also feel uincomfortable but pads work fine. Either way it's messy but for sheer comfort I go with pads. I don't mind using environmentally friendly pads...I wish more stores carried them.

not sure
03/25/2012
Not sure I agree with the term "man owned". Generally, the owner of the company does not actually have much to do with decision making, that is usually determined by shareholders and the market and the CEO (which is not always the owner). I don't really see this as a bad thing so long as they're a socially responsible company that makes a product I don't mind using. It's not their fault they saw an opportunity and took it.

true story. but don't you think since only women bleed and use tampons, tampons should be sold by female companies and therefore help a female prosper, rather than a male prospering off of the saddest week of our month?

Guess what!!! America is run by a man!!!!
I kind of think in this day and age where women shout for equality that when a man (or men?) run a company that actually helps women out... women think it is not gender fair.
Thanks to whoever invented tampons man or woman!!! And thanks to whoever owns OB!!! You have my deepest thanks! Now. Can I get 50% of tampons for the rest of my life???
Although, I think Bballard said it best... next time I ask a man to buy my tampons, I am going to bring this up!

I don't support tampons in general, those companies usually don't have health or sustainability issues in mind. You'll notice companies that manufacture reusable menstrual cups are run by women...

I don't really think about who owns the tampon company as long as they work how i need them to. How many men own dildo and vibrator companies?

Wow...a lot to think about.
For now, however, I will stick to dealing with "man owned" companies, since, of course, "One Small Step For Man" has nothing to do with being male or female. We are all MAN...as in MANKIND.
Parcing words to be P.C. is just silly. Oh, and as to who owns a company...I am not going to be sexist, racist or otherwise close minded. If it is a good product they are producing, why would or should I care who owns it, really?

I'm with silverdrop. I'm not sexist in my feminine choices. I get whatever works for me and that's that.
03/25/2012
If I avoided buying things for myself (a woman) from every company that was run by a man, I would be severely limited in what I would be able to get for myself. Just because a man runs it doesn't mean that there are women giving imput into their products. I'm positive they do plenty of market research to determine what women's needs are when making their products. Also the CEO of the company doesn't do everything involved with the creation of the product, there's probably plenty of women working there.
Just because a man runs the company doesn't mean he's a sexist man with no interest in making the best possible product for women.

No one is stopping a "woman" from starting a feminine hygiene company. These companies are run by boards and share holders, not just like, Don Draper or Roger sitting in an office getting blow jobs and getting drunk.
It doesn't bother me at all.
03/25/2012
No. It's inevitable. If the product works, then it works, and I'll buy it.
03/25/2012
I have much better things to do with my time than try to figure out if everything I bought was from a company owned by a woman; including feminine hygiene products. I understand if that matters to someone, it's just not my thing. Give me something that works, that is affordable and if possible as environmentally friendly as possible and I'll be there.
03/25/2012
Because of the issues you listed and the awful chemicals in pads and tampons I bought a Diva cup and I also plan on switching to reusable fabric pads.

EF is owned by a man. Are not many sex toy companies owned/run by men too?
My bottom line when it comes to buying things is quite simple.
1) Does it do the job I will be wanting it to do? If my answer is no, then I look for something else. If the answer is yes, I buy it.
I still don't really get the whole purpose of this poll. Are there really people out there who wouldn't buy tampons or stockings or corsets or something made with women in mind just because a man owns the company? Or all the shareholders are men? Wouldn't this be a little similar to me saying... "sorry America!!! I shan't visit you ever again because you are run by a bunch of men"?

Did you know Avon, a company that claims it's for women, was founded by a man? Who cares if it's something you like and find effective? Even if the owner has not need for the product, if it's well made and suits the needs that it was designed off, what does it matter?
04/21/2012
I didn't know but it doesn't bother me.
04/21/2012
Most makeup, perfume and female unmentionables were designed, marketed and even shelved by men. Does that matter at all? The only part that I care about is that somewhere, the designer consulted women, women's charts and vaginas for what was best for them as well, and not what they thought worked without research. I'm okay with it being owned by men-- most things are, just as long as they give two craps long enough to think of comfort, workability and a women's desire to have a good life.

Granted, the diva cup is available and there are some non-disposable pads, but I feel like it's kind of hard to be "against" tampons and pads, but maybe that's just me. I can't exactly sit in a tent for 6 days while I bleed...
