Madonna & Cirque Du Soleil At Superbowl

Contributor: Cherrylane Cherrylane
Just recently got word that Madonna will be performing the Superbowl halftime show with the help of Cirque Du Soleil.

Personally, I'm appalled (as usual). I didn't have very high expectations because I think the Superbowl halftime show choice has been horrible for years and years, but this just seems even more ridiculous than ever to me. To my knowledge, she hasn't put out new music in ages and what she has put out hasn't been any good anyway. Not to mention, Madonna and Cirque Du Soleil are about the least footbally proud to be murrican thing I can think of. It's like asking Gaga to perform in 30 years when she's no longer relevant. I *get* that she's got name recognition and is all popular, but... still.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions as to who you'd personally think would make a "better" half time show?

I'll watch if the act involves an endless stream of clowns emerging from Madonna's clown car.

I don't think she's any less "relevant"/ridiculous than Janet Jackson was.

And, honestly, a lot of older people watch football games - people who liked her back in the day. And it's true, shittons of people, even young people, still love her.

And I'm guessing this 35-50 crowd is more who the advertisers are aiming for, anyway - more secure and more disposable income.

And to her credit, Madonna is good at putting on a show, which is what the Superbowl is - largely an overblown spectacle during which some people play a team sport.

I think it's a great choice, because I like both Madonna and Cirque. I don't think there's anything ridiculous or irrelevant about it.

Well let's see...after the Janet Jackson debacle, she's probably been blacklisted from NFL events...the Rolling Stones did it last year (right?), Def Leppard is just way too old even though they have a new album, Nickelback sucks (well, I like them but no one else does), Jay-z just had a kid so that's out, Snoop Dog has a bad reputation and isn't family friendly, a country act would have the entire world changing the channel except for three people...who is left?

The current "hit" stars all lipsync their performances. Madonna seems like a good choice considering the options the NFL actually had to choose from. And Cirque is super popular right now and not everyone gets to see it (my god those tickets are outrageous), so yeah...you won't hear me complaining.

I had no idea. But I don't like it. I don't know who I would chose other wise. But there is gotta be something much better.

I think the Black Keys would be great.

But they aren't "mainstream" enough for such a "spectacle" of an event. Even though I've seen multiple sports shows use some of their songs and get played at NFL games and their music is in multiple commercials.
