Living with parents/family, by choice or not.

Contributor: voenne voenne
It seems a lot of people are having to move back in with parents or other family these days. Either it's because of the economy, student loan debt, or, they're just staying home with parents longer while they are in school and not quite sure what they're doing. I'm in my twenties, so I'm seeing this a lot with the people in my age group, but I know it's happening outside of my age group as well.

When did you leave home to live on your own? Did you ever end up back with your family, or are you still living with them?

Private voting, since it may be personal to some. Feel free to share. I had to return to living with my grandmother a while ago, and I try to convince myself it's okay that I can't handle living on my own right now. I'm still young, I guess.

Divorced my ex-husband and went back home. In school to get my degree so I can actually get a decent-paying job (shush, let me have my delusions). Meanwhile, besides school, I'm helping out around the house and doing the errands and taking my mother and brother to their doctors' appointments.

I was at the tail-end of the "get the fuck out the house and don't come back" generation, so - even though my parents understand and welcomed me back - I feel like a failure for having to move back in.

I've not left home yet. I'm not financially stable, nor do I think will my parents let me leave. LOL They actually like having me around. I'm quiet, I keep my room and bathroom tidy, clean up after myself when eating...etc.

I came back to stay for a couple of months after having lived on my own for many years. It was awful. I missed having my personal space.

I lived with them until we got another house, and were financially stable.

I still live with my family, and plan to until after college when I can find a house. As long as I'm working or going to school, I'm welcome here and I don't really want to rent an apartment if I can help it; I'd rather go for a house right off the bat.

I lived at home my first couple of years in college, then got an apartment. I wouldn't mind living with them again short term. Saving money would be nice.

I moved back a couple times, during college and after. Thankfully, my parents never hesitated and have always been supportive.

Moved out of my parents house when I was 21, but my husband and I currently live with his parents because they're both disabled and unable to take care of themselves.

Moved out of my mother's house because she basically said I was too old to be living with her and she wanted to concentrate on her family with her second husband. I ended up moving in with my girlfriend's parents, although I've been trying to get out of it and failing. I don't like relying on others, and they're such good people that I feel like a burden.

I had to move back in for a while when health issues made me miss several months of work and there was no way I could afford rent anymore. I am definitely much happier living alone, but really thankful that I had that option to fall back on when times were sucky!

I stay with them during transition periods between education. It really is a good way to save money as long as they are comfortable with it.

I moved out when I was 21 but then came back 6 months later and lived at home again for a few years. I am now on my own again but who knows what the future holds.

I left home at 15-not a runaway, just unwanted there. I have been on my own 9or married but in my own residence) ever since. HOWEVER...my brother has lived with me off and on, my father has had to move in with me due to finance and health, and my daughter and her family are always welcome if they need to. So, no, I moved out--they just followed me, LOL!!!

I moved out at 17. And moved back in for a few months every few years inbetween. Long enough for them to drive me crazy. I love my family but I cant live with them. After 7 years you get used to things your own way and in your own space.

I still live at home and I HATE it. I did it because of school and medical insurance. I finished school last month but due to having foot surgery next month I am stuck here. It just sucks because the doctor told me I wouldn't be released to go find a job until 3-4 months after surgery. I just want out of here and on my own. My grandma (mother's mom) lives here too and we never really got along and it just sucks. Always tension in here most of the time. I'm ready to get a place with my fiance and get some PRIVACY. I never imagined I'd still be at home at this age. It's depressing to me.

I still live at home and I really, really need to get out of here. Only still here because of financial reasons. I'm in the process of moving though, so hopefully it won't be long, and I doubt I've ever been this excited about something. Everyone's been telling me to do it, not because I'm "getting too old" but because it's better for me and such. I agree.

I am currently living with my parents because

A: I am in a foreign country and so I cannot live outside military housing.
B: Going to school.

I hope to save enough money to get m own place when I return. Here's hoping the economy recovers.

I moved out very early, then moved back in to finish high school. When I graduated at 17, I moved away to university, then moved back in with my father when I was 20-by choice. Now I live on the other side of the country, but if/when I move home again, both my husband and I will move back into my father's home. We still pay for every third payment on the house, and it's huge. I don't see the need of living separately and developing more land when there is plenty of space there. I think more people should co-habitate and live with their families longer.

I left home when I went to college out of state but came back due to my mom being left in a wheelchair after a bogus spinal surgery. My dad was out of the states at the time so I transferred to online classes, changed majors and have been living at home. I'm in no real hurry to move out, I want to ensure I'm financially stable with a good job that isn't going to fall out at a moment's notice, and also some roommates that I could stand to live with before I make a wild dash to live on my own. My parents are also considering moving out of state, and if I stick with them I can move as well and seek out more personable company and friends in another place.

I really don't have friends here. I have 2 but both of them aren't exactly people I'd want to live with, considering some circumstances that they don't know about (my being FtM is a big influence as to who I'd be willing to live with) and seeing as no one but two friends who live in Cali and NY are the only one's who know it's a pretty big deciding factor. Heh.

I have gone back a couple of times when things fell through, but I've been out on my own for almost 2 1/2 years now.
