I'm going away this weekend. From Thursday night to late Sunday night. Three days of laying on the beach and playing on the boardwalk with my boy. I am NOT bringing my laptop. This may not seem like anything major to some, but this will be the first time in easily 5 years that I've been separated from it. My ex-husband was a severe blackberry addict so he never had issue w/ me checking email and checking in with my day job while we were away. But my new boy likes vacation to be vacation and I think he's right, and I need to let go a little. But frankly, I'm nervous. I'm going to feel a disconnect that I'm simply not used to. Is anyone else out there like this or am I the only one panicking about no computer use for 3 days???

It's perfectly all right. I usually take weeks off because of either travel or psychological necessity. It helps you look at the world more and experience it, because sometimes we disconnect from the world of the five senses when we connect to the cyber world.
DEFINITELY enjoy your weekend at the beach - between the waves and wind and feel of the sand (and time with your boyfriend), you won't miss the electronics as much as you think. Time out for you and your body and your senses.

I think you're definitely right...In fact, I know you are. It just seems so foreign to me because I'm always so plugged in. It's scarier than I want to admit!

I think I may be worse off then you when it comes to being separated from my laptop. I'll wake up in the morning and instantly think about the emails or other messages I may have missed. When I cant get a signal for the internet I go through withdrawals so I completely understand. But I think once you get on vacation and start enjoying yourself you'll forget about not having your laptop with you. The first day might be the roughest but after that I think you'll be fine. You'll even feel proud that you went those three days without it. Once the vacation is over you'll more then likely run to your laptop though.

If you can get through the first day you should be fine. Just remember that you are on VACATION. I try to remember the times with my parents when there was no such thing, we lived right?

I'm in the process of moving and may be without the internet for a few weeks. So this has been hard on me and makes me feel very disconnected from what is going on with my online buddies, etc. So it has been a bit hard on me and I don't know what to do! So I can understand how you feel, I went on vacation last winter without any computer or anything, that was hard for me but in the end I felt that it was the best decision I mean, if you are going on vacation you should take advantage of it and just relax and be away from anything. It's a great way to focus on yourself and you guy's relationship.

I never panic, actually. If I am going away, I am going away for a reason - to leave all of this and have a good time. I understand the panic, though. My partner is like this. But whenever she comes to visit, she always forgets because I make it worthwhile.
Have a good time, enjoy the beach, and forget about the internet for the weekend. Just relax and vacation.

Thank you all I'm sure I'll be glad I did it in the end and hopefully I can keep myself from wondering what's in my inbox while I'm gone. It's just nice to know I'm not the only one!!!

I have the same issues when on vacation. On our weekends I don't check my email as much and I'm not on the computer as much but I do check in at least once or twice during the day, so on vacation with no computer I feel disconnected. I always have my phone though, which has web and email and stuff. It's annoying to use for long periods of time though..so I will just use it to glance at stuff or get emails. I usually only will use it for a few minutes here and there and I don't check it while at the beach or while out doing something...only during down times or car rides. There's always some time while my husband is in the bathroom, showering, using the hotel gym...SOMETHING where me checking my email or playing on my phone isn't taking away from US time. It helps me stay feeling connected without really being on my laptop all day!! We have brought our laptops on vacation before, but since we both work at home having access to a computer makes us want to check in on work which always ends up time consuming.

I'm the same way. If I'm not at my computer for less than a day I start to feel sort of lost. I have my Droid but that isn't the same.

While I worry a lot and like to be able to access my email at all times... I think there's something really wonderful about the perspective you get from being truly unplugged. Enjoy it, sweetie!

I am a computer geek and I cannot be separated from my tech or I start to suffer from computer withdrawal. When I go to other peoples houses for a few days I will bring my laptop and I make sure they have a wireless router or I will bring my own. Currently I am thinking of getting wireless broadband for my Ipod touch and laptop.

My husband will bring the laptop along but we only use it to google information on the things related to the location we're visiting. I don't have the urge to use a computer when I'm in vacation mood.
In fact, my laptop malfunctioned for more than a week and I didn't even bother to reach for the desktop! Just got my laptop fixed yesterday, so here I am!

We usually bring one laptop, but I always have my Iphone, thank goodness!
I just spent $60 (well a bit less since I had a GC) on a silent running notebook cooler so it lasts a bit longer.
