Kidney Stones

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
So I'm back to my kidney stone pain (awful!), and I'm curious about you guys. I know having kidney stones sucks, and then the doctor tells me that, because I've had one, I'm more likely to have another! Icky, icky! The nurse also told me that some women say that kidney stones felt more painful than childbirth. So now I'm here to ask you guys. What do you think?

I've only had one, I can't compare to childbirth but I can tell you it WAS painful, but I changed my diet and never ended up with another, so I think it's all about the person, and their health in general. I'm very sorry to hear that you have them!!! Feel better hun!

Between my genetics and birth control, I've had about one a year! The first time was the worst because we didn't know what it was! They did an ultrasound and saw a lot more in there, and told me that they might or might not come down or dissolve someday, but that it wasn't worth the internal bleeding the ultrasound would cause to break them up.

I hope that your first was your last!

I haven't had them, but one of my best friends and her husband have each had them. The pain was enough to make her vomit a few times.

I can't imagine anything being more painful than childbirth, but then I didn't imagine accurately how painful that was beforehand either.

I hope this is your last kidney stone.

I've had two. They were every bit as bad as anybody has described.

One of my co-workers (male) has them about three times a year. I can't even imagine having to go through that so often.

I had my first one in December, and then 3 since then. The last one I had was in August. The first one was AWFUL, and the last one was almost as bad. The 2 in between were painful, but a piece of cake compared to the other 2. I don't have kids, but I know people who have had both children and kidney stones - and they all say kidney stones were worse than childbirth. But keep in mind, not all kidney stones feel the same, not all of them are equally excruciating, just like all labors and deliveries don't feel the same and are not equally excruciating.

I can sympathize completely with the pain you are going through. It is truly awful. Enjoy those pain meds, you deserve them!

I had one... without pain medication, I couldn't do anything but lay on the cold bathroom floor. I couldn't eat or stand up. It was horrible pain.

3 times a year? That's insane! There's no way I could do that. No way at all.

I've never had one, but I used to work in a health food store and there were several customers who had had MULTIPLE stones over the years. Quite a few of them said that once they discovered this product called Stone Free by Planetary Herbals and started taking it regularly, they never had kidney stones again. Supposedly, it breaks the stone down while it's still inside of you.

Like I said, I've never had a stone, so I can't really vouch for the product personally, but it might be something to research if you keep having them. Just be warned, I've seen the tablets, and they're HUGE, so you have to be okay with swallowing large pills.

Good luck. My S.O. has had them twice, so I feel for you.

I'm sorry you're going through this, Kayla. It's pretty friggin painful. I haven't had them, but I've been in childbirth. I've heard women who have done both and most say childbirth still hurts more most of the time, but my guess is it depends on the person.

My OBGYN used to say about kidney stones, "They say that because it's the worst pain a man can have, save losing a limb or having pancreatitis. Childbirth still hurts more."

Can they laser them first, so it will be more like sand than an entire stone? I've known patients who had the laser procedure done and it wasn't terrible at all. Make sure you get LOTS of pain medication, either way.

Good luck, honey. I hope it goes well.

I used to know someone who got them very frequently like that. Since they were pretty young too.

Also my sympathies, Kayla and feel better soon!

Mine was very tiny, and it hurt, but nothing I could even imagine that would compare to childbirth. I've never had kids but what I mean is it didn't hurt all that bad. Basically felt like burning urine. It came out in pieces.

I had them one time. I had small ones, I an not sure about the whole child birth thing either. Trust me child birth is painful. I just had my second baby almost 7months ago. I went for 10hours with no pain medicine then after being stretched; my cervix; I was sent into contractions that topped the chart with only being 3 cm dilated, I had to wait on hour like that for pain meds. Not easy thing to do, trust me. Tip of the hat to natural child birth giving women!

Never had one, but one of my patients did. That memory of the pain and anguish he was in is permentally burned into my memory circuits. I sent him to the hospital in an ambulance. He got a truckload of meds, passed it a couple days later, and was back to normal soon after. Feel for you, good luck.
