Is there such a thing as having "too much" clothes?

Contributor: VieuxCarre VieuxCarre
So, I did laundry today and I realized I have a ton of clothes. I thought for a moment that I have "too much" but when I go to find something to wear out I have "nothing" to wear.

Is there such thing as having too much clothes? Just a fun topic

It's funny because I'm going through the same thoughts today. I'm doing laundry for my whole family (me, my husband and our three kids) and there's just so many clothes and yet all of us at one point are saying "I have nothing to wear!!!" So I thought I'd sort through and get rid of the stuff noone wants to wear so that it's not taking up space or landing on the floor without being worn, but I keep saying "oh this would be good for..."

I think that's just part of being a woman, really. Women are dastardly fickle and that "amazing!" silk blouse that they would "wear with everything" ends up in the back of the closet for no apparent reason.

I think I once read an article about no matter how many items of clothing a woman buys, she wears about only 20 different items total. Something along those lines.

I definitely have too many clothes and could probably stand to give them to a charity or whatever, but I'm at the point of "well, I'll fit into them again... some day."

I fall into the trap of "oh, this would be good for" often when I go through my stuff. My problem is that I don't want to buy new things because I am in the process of losing weight, but at the same time I need things that fit me as well.

It's a Catch 22. I've thrown things out and STILL have a lot of things. I'm a sale whore as well. I'll buy a top or a pair of jeans if they're stupid cheap and maybe wear it once or twice. It's ridiculous LOL.

I say the same thing! Well, I've gotten better with it because I figure I can just get new stuff if and when I am smaller. That issue has gotten better. My problem is I have stuff that's too big now but I keep it all because I don't want to keep having to buy new stuff and replace my wardrobe every few weeks!

Yea I'm trying to lose weight too so I have the stuff I fit now, the stuff that's slightly too big but I don't want to get rid of yet because it does still fit, and then there's tons of stuff that I might/hopefully fit into in the somewhat near future.

And my husband STILL likes to remind me about the time 5 years ago that he lost weight and I got rid of all his stuff in larger sizes and then he switched to a desk job and gained it all back and had to restock his wardrobe.

I just get bored of my clothes after a year or so and do an annual closet cleaning to take out stuff I'm bored with and donate it to a thrift store. Then I go to another thrift store to buy new clothes.

I'm transitioning right now, as I have lots of serious winter clothes from living in Montana, but I'm living in Florida now where I won't need ANY of it.

I have only about a dozen items that I've kept for years, all of them given to me by my best friend who has 'funkadelic' taste (as she phrased it).

Too many clothes? Dahling, only Imelda Marcos has too many clothes.

I drive my husband crazy with how many clothes I have! Every couple of weeks, I tell him that I'm going to get rid of a bunch of them, like the ones I haven't worn in years. At first, he would get excited about it, and now he just rolls his eyes and nods. I have gotten rid of some things from time-to-time, but never very many, haha!

I clean out my wardrobe a couple times a year and give what doesn't fit me anymore either to my younger cousins or to the daughters of my mom's friends. Some stuff gets thrown out because I simply wore it to death and it's in bad condition.

I'm reeeeeally bad about buying nicer clothes/dresses and then never wearing them or only wearing them once. I'll see it in the store, love it, have to buy it, then never go anywhere nice enough to bother wearing it lol. One day I'll realize that jean shorts and flip flops, or skinny jeans and converse are better investments than that pretty ruffle-y dress.

Anyway, I define "too many" clothes as when I don't have room for them all... and I have a huge closet that takes up the length of one wall and a large dresser lol!

I have too many of the same kind of clothes. I need a wardrobe upgrade! I haven't had one since 2003!

OMG I am EXACTLY the same way. I have over 50 pairs of jeans and still wear the same 6-7 most of the the time. I have over 100 tanks. WHY? I have no fucking clue lol. I have even more tops and tees. But when I go to find something to go out in, it always takes me forever.

I must be a real curiosity since I am a woman that does not want to own that much...in clothing, shoes or anything for that matter. Yes, I have more than enough clothes (in my opinion) but even with that, I only have 4 pairs of jeans, about a dozen shirts/blouses, a few dresses/skirts and some other things. I probably have more lingerie than anything else. My hubby has WAY more clothes than I do. Tee-hee. I don't keep anything that is not in good condition, fits well and is stylish to my body, therefore I get rid of anything that gets stained, frayed, worn or outdated. I just don't feel the need to own tons of stuff that I don't need or use.

I have about 6 screen printed shirts, almost all the rest have no words on them and most are solid too.

I sooo wanted the guys from Queer Eye to save me! (Jay was so cute too!)

I never really passed my college grunge phase, style-wise, and I'm a sucker for a deal. I get clothes at Target off the clearance rack, so I have countless $2 t-shirts and tank tops. I'm hard to fit when it comes to slacks and jeans, so when I find a style I like I buy 3-4 pairs and wear them until they're completely worn out and then get more. I love comfy clothes, so that's what I wear most of the time, but I occasionally do have to look presentable, so I have some nicer things that I rarely put on but still have to keep. I am NOT into shoes. At all. My feet are really wide, so most shoe styles hurt.

If you asked my husband this, he'd emphatically say yes! There are times when I'd agree, but mostly I think you can never have too many clothes. Just like you can never have too many pairs of shoes

I constantly go through the "I have nothing to wear" phase. I decided that I had nothing to wear so many times at school this year and kept bringing clothes from home so often, that by the end of the year when I moved out of my apartment I had five full trash bags full of clothes to bring home. Needless to say my boyfriend wasn't very happy with me when we were attempting to load all my stuff into his car

YOU SAID IT.

I don't remember the last time I counted all my shoes. Well over 30 pairs, though. I'm such a sucker for shoes.

I am a clearance rack QUEEN. I have tons of cheap shirts and such. I buy in bulk too since my body shape is hard to fit. I find a lot of nice things that fit well at Forever XXI believe it or not. You should look there sometime if you're ever in the market for a new top or something!

Hahaha I did the same thing!. I went home a few times right before the end of the semester since I get more work done at home. I filled up my ginormous suitcase twice, and had one HUGE trash bag full of clothes, not counting the large plastic container full of all undies/pjs/and tank tops plus another large plastic container full of shoes.

I wish!

I love to shop (ask Cyn), but I just chicken out when it comes to paying for new clothes. I wanna get a trip in this week to Salvation army for clothes, there are some good deals there.

I had tons of "impractical" clothing when I was in high school, nearly all of it from rummaging at Goodwill. I had flouncy tops and weird dresses and all sorts of things that I never actually wore outside of my home because they were just so out there. When I moved into my first college dorm, I left most of the stuff home. No room for it; no need for it. Still, I kinda felt like a part of my childhood died along with it
