If you had a choice...

Let say that there are two jobs being proposed to you at the same time. one job will keep you wealthy for the rest of you life, but you know that your going to wake up every morning dreading to go to work and hate every minuet of being there. The other job is you dream job (whatever that may be to you personally). But the pay is horrid, It will be just barely enough to get by in life. Now which would you choose?

If we didn't have to leave our names, I would vote

Honestly, I had my dream job. I was losing money hand over fist and it was killing my health because we are going broke. I wasn't even scraping by these last two years, I am LOSING money. They say, "Do what you love and the money will follow." Bullshit. I did what I loved and I'm broke and into debt and then fighting with my SO, and my kids are miserable, and our house is losing value so we can't even borrow money on that and there are NO freaking jobs and I am no longer a romantic when it comes to being "poor and happy." The two simply don't go together, at least if you have any real responsibility.

Being "happy" and broke sounds so romantic when you are young, when you are older, and have kids, and a mortgage and big responsibilities (like sending children to college and making sure they are clothed and fed and need a car that actually won't leave you stranded, and parents who are getting old, and you also have to worry about STARVING in your own old age) the whole "I'm happy and poor." thing get really old really fast.

For myself, I would much rather work a job I love and be just scraping by, but I have two children to take care of. I want to give them a more comfortable upbringing than I had and I am willing to sacrifice for them.

I voted based on myself alone. I don't have kids. If I did, then my kids would come first and I'd work whatever job I hated for them.

I agree. Right now I'm getting by but when I'm done with school I'll do whatever it takes (within reason) to make decent money. I have loans to pay back and my son to think about.

Actually, a Dream Job that paid decent and regular money would be the best. I haven't found that yet.

Shift Nursing is becoming too demanding, now that I have some serious health issues (yeah, you can say, "I can only work part time." But, they are going to schedule you for double shifts or "ask" (demand) that you work them.)

So, I'm at odds for the time being. I thought I could find something at least Seasonal for Christmas, but I am cursed with being "over qualified" as well as not being in my teens or 20s, which seems to be what most Retail establishments are looking for. They have ways of finding out exactly how old you are. I'm in a strange place with my education, being self-employed for years (I have learned being self employed makes you POISON to so many employers) and not being 25 years old anymore. *sigh*

I do have a client from my home business coming to pay me back fees for over 5 months of medical equipment rental, so at least I'll have a little cash for Christmas, but not much.

The last four years, I have been in my somewhat dream job, but getting horrible pay and barely scraping by. I should have gotten decent pay 2 years ago, but with the economy that went totally out the window. Within a few years I should be making better money, but the main problem that will still remain is that I will only be home for probably 3-4 nights a week. Otherwise I am on the road sleeping in hotel rooms. And there is really nothing more depressing than working your ass off for minimal pay, not getting to see your wife as much as you would like, and not getting to enjoy the possessions which you do have at home because you are staying in hotel rooms.

I have a job (for now) that I hate - but can't find anything that pays better. With 2 kids in college - believe my pay matters. I'm hoping to get something that pays well - and that I enjoy more - that's my 2011 NY resolution.

I have had jobs that paid better at the time I came to this job but I was sick to my stomach every day going in to them. I absolutely hated it and made the choice to be happy and have 0 disposable income. Fortunately it worked out and the job I took to be happy took off and I do pretty well - only problem is that now I'm back on my own and I live in a very expensive area (high cost of living) so I have pretty much nothing left at the end of the month, yet again. I'm ok with it though. I could get a p/t job on top of it but it would kill the little time I have for a social life so I'm just working hard at learning to live within my means.

I would much rather have a job I loved that didn't pay well than one I hated that did. I've had sucky jobs before, and I hated going to them everyday. Being miserable for eight hours a day is a great way to be miserable in general. Same for being happy.

I'm working part time because I'd rather have more time than more money. I don't need a lot of money since I live with my parents who give me cheap rent and I don't have a car or any other major expenses.

Baking is my dream job... However thepay sucks for restaurant owners unless you're REALLY popular, and the hours suck for bakeries even more than regular restaurants (up at two AM, bed by 8), and I'd STILL rather do that than be rich and not doing my dream job

Tough call. My family has been scraping by for as long as we can remember and it is not fun at all. While a dream job would be preferable, I would have to choose the dreadful job with big bucks. Why? Because I know I could find a way to make it less dreadful. And life can be dreadful when you're just scraping by and could make one resent the dream job with crappy pay.

With 3 children dream jobs aren't really to be had. Hubby likes his work but it's still working he'd rather just commercial fish but he can't make enough money to pay for the gas on his boat let alone feed a family.

Me, I'm a photographer which I immensely love but the only way to make money means dealing with human beings and to be honest I really don't like too. Photographing them yes, handling money and chasing after them to ensure I'm paid no. I'm on a break deciding if I'm going to continue my business or not because someone I freelanced for screwed me out of thousands of dollars and I'm leery to get back into it. It's one thing to submit work and get paid for usage but it's another to aggressively photograph weddings and portraits and have to deal with personal likes and dislikes of others. Not sure I want to do it again.

We had two in college until about a year and a half ago, now we only have one in college. It's a rough time, especially when it hit just as the economy was tanking.

Oh, Tabby I know what you are going through.

Being Private Practice Lactation Consultant was my dream job. But, like you, I have found people don't think they have to pay for my services or my products! WTF is that about. I get "But I have a baby!" Uh, so? ALL my clients have babies, you still have to pay your bill (unless you are on the Pro Bono Plan, but clients have to be low income and I've had women who live in the richest areas of Chicago want the discount rate or everything for free. Sorry, there's a difference between NOT being able to pay (and I'll probably see you for very little and find you a pump on a grant if you need it badly) and simply thinking you shouldn't have to pay for services or products.

It's amazing when people think they don't have to pay their bills, and you go to their homes and see a frickin' Mercedes in the driveway, with a Land Rover next to it, they live in a McMansion and I get whining, "I have a baby. Don't you have a sliding scale?" "Yes, I do, but with your husband's $350,000.00 a year job with the law firm, my guess is you don't qualify." (And this is often AFTER the contract is signed and the first payment was made.) I just don't get it. I hate handling the money part of the job.

I had a rich client screw me out of a wad of money in June and have only had one client since then. She "threatened" me when I told her I'd have to get a collection agency if she didn't pay what she owed. I HATE it.

Some Dream Job.

(Sorry to be so negative, but I think those of us who have tried our "Dream Jobs" and have kids and houses to pay for as well see this as much less romantic than those who have never done it.)

In my experience, the rich are much more likely to try to screw small businesses out of money. How do you think they got rich in the first place? Greed is an ugly thing, and it only grows worse when it's fed.

True dat, girl! My low income clients are always on time with their reduced payments, and often even offer something when on a full Grant.

I voted other because their are too many variables for me to pick one. For example how many hours I'm I at this dreadful job? What city am I in? What is my life like out side the job. How much I'm I going to be able to enjoy all those big bucks I'm making? Do I just hate the job or is it actually dangerous or damming to my health beyond that? Why do I hate the job?

Under the right circumstance putting up with a job I hate would be worth it, under others not worth it all.

I voted as though I were just out of college with few responsibilities, thinking that my good cheer and happiness from having such a great job would help me find a husband with a good job.

But actually, if I had a kid in college like I do now, or a husband with no income, like I do now, I would have to answer differently.

I would rather have a dream job but I think ideally I can settle for something in the middle. Work that I don't dread but that isnt the funnest thing in the world either. With a modest pay so that I can pay the bills and have money left over for treats.

Im going with needing the vacation....lmao.
On one hand, I'm not driven by money. But I still need to live and I NEED my toy splurges I regulary go on.... my therapy!

I do what I love at the moment but it pays enough for me to have my luxuries. It just takes me awhile to save for big things like holidays. Mind you, if I didn't spend it on toys, I'd save faster.
