Identifying 8 Common Bug Bites

Contributor: Ansley Ansley
I found this article on CNN on how to identify 8 common bug bites. There are nifty pieces of information about how each species came to the U.S. I found it to be pretty helpful. WARNING: The last picture is a close-up of a spider. Here's the link: link

And in that same vein, what's the worst bug bite you've sustained?

Why'd you have to warn about the last picture being a spider? My two pet spiders were very offended by that racial comment. (hehehe i jest)

When I was visiting home last month I get tore up by some flying ants. I had tons of bite marks all over and they itched like no other. It wasn't too fun.

They didn't make the list, but Sand Fly bites are the WORST.

Because it's the nice thing to do for those absolutely terrified of spiders.

Flying ants? That's a new one for me. Mostly chiggers, deer flies, ticks, fleas and regular fire ants 'round these parts.

Oooooh, yeah. I've heard people complain about those. They always make me think of sand-spurs, though. And those are an absolute biatch and a half. Used to spend hours picking them out of our pets' and farm animals' fur.

I wish they had included a photo of the bite. That would have been more helpful. I suppose that's what google images is for.

Anyone else noticed that they skipped directly from 8/10 to 10/10?

My hubby and I both got bitten by bed bugs while we were on our honeymoon. In the most EXPENSIVE hotel we stayed in during the trip. However, I have to say that chigger bites are the worst I've ever experienced.

Fire ants are the worst. What they're not telling you is that *after* the little suckers sink their mandibles into your skin, they sting you repeatedly like a wasp. And the venom burns bad. I got stung a couple of years ago and spent an hour in the ER waiting to see how far the reaction would go. All I could think of was "Bring me more ICE!!"

I've gotten spider bites that have given me 6x3" welts.. but also have had mosquito bites do the same thing. Two weeks ago I went camping and my eye looked like it had been punch, mosquito bit me just under the eyelid, swoll up like crazy.

I got bit by a deer fly on my ankle while I was in Montana once; that was awful!

we dont have much in the way of bugs that bite around here. Some spiders, none that are poisonous.

Seriously. When I was a very young child, I sat in a fire ant bed. I was screaming and crying as my mother ran outside. It took forever to get all of them off and I remember her telling me about how they smothered me in Calamine and tried to keep me from scatching. I think everyone was thankful I wasn't allergic. My worst insect encounters have been with wasps. Hmmm, might have to write up that story for the Eden Lit free write.

Oh that's horrible! It was bad enough dealing with it as an adult, I can't imagine a poor little kid going through it! People have told us since then that the burning will subside if you put meat tenderizer of the stings... of course you hear things like that AFTER you've already been through it (lol).

No joke and imagine my horror when my step-mother (at the time) poured bleach on a yellow jacket sting. Or when my sister told me to put tobacco in my mouth and use it as a salve when I was eight years old. Bug bites in general are evil, evil things!!!
