I see a topic about paying for your own wedding dress.. how about making your own wedding dress?

Anyone ever interested in making their own wedding dress? Since I was little I've always been crazy about the idea of a red wedding dress and while they aren't really on the market and I wouldn't dare buy one and dye it. I'm probably going to end up making my own with a corset and full skirt pattern.

I wouldn't make the dress because I wouldn't know where to begin, but for both my proms I made my own accessories and I'm sure that tradition will follow to my wedding. Every body always raved about the stuff I had made more than the stuff I'd bought.

That's a really cool idea. I can hardly sew a button on so I'm pretty sure it would be a disaster if I tried to make a dress.

I don't personally make my own clothes, but most of my clothes (fancy ones) are handmade. I usually commission someone. Not only does the item fit exactly the way it should, it's usually one of a kind and a better value than the crap you can get at a retailer.

I did make my own wedding dress, and, strangely enough, it was red. Okay, it was actually burgundy, but that's a shade of red.

BTW, most wedding dresses can not be dyed very easily because of the synthetic material they are made of. It is possible to dye synthetics, but it requires specialized dyes and the knowledge to use them. So, if you can sew, you are definitely better off making your own.

If I knew how to sew well enough, I'd think about it. I love to do DIY stuff in general anyway, and making your own dress you could get exactly what you wanted.

I bought my wedding dress because beaded lace wasn't something I wanted to try and deal with sewing. But I made a few prom dresses, and those came out alright. The biggest thing with making your own dress is patience. I didn't have it and mine looked like I ran out of patience about halfway through lol.

For what you want to do, you're probably a lot better off making it yourself if you can sew. It sounds totally awesome!
