I saved my puppy's life tonight!!! Have you had to Heimlich your animal?

Contributor: js250 js250
Tonight was a very scary but rewarding evening. My puppy was choking on a piece of steak we fed it after dinner. I picked her up, and without any previous knowledge of this, pushed in on her belly while going in an up motion. Hubby was on the phone with the vet....

I kept performing this maneuver on her while enroute to the vet and just as she was about to pass out--here came the steak!!! Our vet said I saved her life. I am so happy and also proud of my actions--hubby was pretty happy with me as well!!!

Puppy is doing great and even wanted her piece of steak back--she did not get it and we are being a lot more careful with the treats.

Yikes! I am glad that you were able to take care of your pet like that, and that she'll continue to be around.

As for me, I've never had occasion to look after a pet like that because I'm allergic to most household animals. No emergency lifesaving measures for the turtle and fish I kept years ago.

Wow, I hope I never have to! D: I'm so glad your puppy is okay!

How awesome of you! That is really great. I love this!

No, I've never had to do the heimlich on any pet or person, but last month I learned kitty CPR because my cat was very sick one night and I panicked. Lol. Thankfully, didn't have to use my newly learned skill.

My partner had to give CPR to a newborn kitten once... didn't make it though

Oh good that your baby is okay! You acted wisely. People always say it's better to do cpr hard and break some ribs rather than lose the person in the case of a human life.

You done good! I'm so happy your puppy is OK now! I know it has to be a tramatic experience and you handled it well! Kudos to you! I have to cut the pieces of meat very tiny for my poodle or he would be choking all the time. Steak is his fav and he gobbles too fast! You are truly brave and heroic!

That's quite a traumatic situation and you handled it so well! Glad to know your puppy's OK now!

What a scary situation. I'm glad puppy is OK. It's funny she still wanted that piece of steak. Maybe she wasn't as traumatized as you.

OMFG I have I had to do it to my cat years ago she was choking on a chicken bone that she took when no one saw her and it was like an instinct for me don't know where it came from I just started to do the Heimlich on her didn't think about it just did it my mom was shocked because I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time she still talks about it every now and then thought I was alone on this one

Oof, glad she's okay.

I've never had an animal choke on anything, but we also had a pretty hard and fast rule about not giving them people food. I was more lenient with my cats than I was with the dogs about that. The cats got popcorn, grapes, and green olives. (Just not very often and only the actual popped corn, none of the kernels. I'd break off the white part first.)

I'm glad she's okay! Once when my dog was a puppy, she was choking a piece of a rawhide. I also did the Heimlich on her like you did. Everyone else around me was freaking out and I just kept going until she coughed it up.

Ah yes! My Mum's dog (rest his soul, as he passed last year due to old age) was choking on a bagel once. We were able to reach in and grab it though as it didn't go down very far. Saved him!

Thanks guys!! I was definitely more traumatized than my puppy. She is 6 months old and all she cared about was cuddles and food. The vet was laughing at her and I was just still freaking out. We live 5 minutes from our vets office so we can get down there just as everything is going to be fine, lol!!

We started out with no human food--but my hubby was raised that you feed your critters what you eat. I cannot break him of that, the vet cannot scare him form doing that so....they get food from him. I do admit to an occasional treat, but not very often. Usually on holidays. It is funny, the dogs sit by hubby when it is time to eat, they ignore mean mommy, lol!!!

So glad that she is okay. It is so scary to be in that situation. While my pet was not a dog, it acted like one. My senior year in high school we did the play "Flowers for Algernon" and I inherited the rat that we used in the play. She was the coolest rat ever, named Zoe. If I called her name, she ran out of her cage and would come to me, she did many other tricks too. One night, after I had moved in with my then boyfriend, now husband, we noticed she was struggling to breath. Then she stopped completely! I won't go into all of the details, but essentially my man saved her life! I knew he was a keeper after that. She died of cancer a year and a half later, but she was a cool rat. No more rats in our house after that.

Ha, I used to know a woman who let her dog drink out of her coffee cup. Spoiled, spoiled dog. That's mainly why we were anti-people food as treats, the begging thing really grates on my nerves.

Glad that you saved your dog. I had to give mine a couples squeezes before when he was alive. He got too excited with food sometimes. My mom had to do it to my cat recently, it was really scary.
