I just found a fly in my salad

Contributor: Starkiller87 Starkiller87
I just found a fly in my salad that I purchased from Trader Joes. I buy these salads all the time. It was really dried up and dead, I found it after taking a few bites of the salad. After I threw up and rinsed my mouth out many times, I went back to the store. And they acted like it was no big deal and could care less. Bad costumer service, it left a really bad taste in my mouth. I emailed corporate because they didn't have a phone number listed. Not very happy this. I dont think I will ever be able to eat their salads again. So grossed out.

I walked through a Trader Joe's once, but after the grocery fella said they didn't carry dry beans, only canned---and then none of their milk brands carried the Real Seal, I put everything in my cart back on the shelves and never went in again.

At the end of the day, contaminations like that are bound to wind up in just about everything... but you'd think they would at least try to make it up to you! Not just not care. I would be grossed out too.

No Real Seal, no dry beans, and they don't apologize for serving people flies? Definitely never going back.

I loved that a place where at least I could get natural ish food was close by too. But I really doubt I can ever go back despite it being the closest grocery store.

Because I agree if there is a contaminated salad what else is contaminated. They gave me a replacement salad like oh just go grab a new one. I really doubt Ill eat it.

I always thought protocol for these type of things is to profusely apologize over and over again. But I guess not, just a oh grab another one whatever--not even a look in the eyes or anything.

Im livid to say the least.

Same. I also feel like bad costumer service should be talked about with other consumers. Bad service shouldnt be rewarded and pushed under the table.

"let a bad taste in your mouth" pun intended?

Some things you buy are really a crap shoot. I avoid most on-site packaged foods. They're usually the least quality controlled.

hahah yeah pun intended. When I emailed corporate I also made a bug pun as well. I couldnt help it.

I usually avoid them to but its Trader Joes, and Ive always heard nothing but good things about them. After all these years I never had a problem, but this was enough for me to never trust prepackaged foods again regardless of who makes them. Ill stop being lazy and make all my own salads, instead of only most of the time.

In my youth, I worked in various restaurants in prep, as a bus boy and finally waiter. What I've seen go on in the kitchens of everything from a pizza place to fine dining, well you probably DON'T want to know.
You could choose to NEVER eat anything that you did not grow and prepare yourself or it just doesn't matter and you continue to live like you didn't know. Or perhaps something in between. Don't think that even factory prepared food is perfectly clean or safe...
LFAO, it isn't.

Right, it's impossible for food to be harvested without any trash at all... I dated a guy who'd grown up on a small grains farm, and he was explaining how grasshopper heads were the biggest, erm, fly in the ointment, pardon the expression, of the flour mills. They're about the same size and weight as a wheat berry, they bounce the same, they're not magnetic... and it's not like you can tell all the grasshoppers politely to "please move over, we're going to harvest now," and you cant apply pesticides for a couple months before harvest.

So... everything you eat came from somewhere. The world's not a sterile place.

That doesn't mean the place that sold it to you shouldn't at least look you in the eye and apologize.

I dont eat factory prepared food so...... I havent since i was a kid. Not because of sanitary reasons but because most of it isnt healthy. I know kitchens arent clean, my problem is when they treat you badly for calling them out on it. Which is the point of this. If they would have apologized from the start it wouldnt have been a big deal.

My own experience with Trader Joes is quite different from yours. I'd purchased a package of soy sausages. (I know that was a mistake from the start... "soy") I couldn't even finish one, they were so awful. I took the remainder of the package back to the store and they quite happily refunded the purchase cost.
I'm not recommending that you forgive rudeness but we are all human subject to making mistakes. I would recommend calling and speaking to the store manager and if that manager gives you grief contact corporate.

This is actually a company policy. You can return anything that you don't like, and they will give you a refund. They have their pluses and minuses, I think. They are a bit pricey, but.... I can get different things than I can at the regular grocery store, so it's nice to change it up sometimes. I've had things that I LOVE from there, and some that I didn't care for too much.

I've had things like this happen as well... Bugs in salad is nasty..Especially when they are the same colour as the lettuce.

good for you for standing up for your right to eat flyless salads! and for letting us know about it. threads like this are what let folks know where to shop (and not to shop!)

so sorry you had a nasty fly in your salad! hope you can find something close to you soon. perhaps a farmer's co-op where you sign up and pay a fee monthly and they bring you fresh harvest? i'd ask around if there's a farmer's market in your area to see if you can sign up for one. good luck!
