I am unfamiliar with most of the terms used in the forums...

Contributor: Breas Breas
Last night for about three hours, I was reading posts on the forums.. I find a lot of the discussions really interesting and I've learnt a lot in the very short amount of time that I have been here, but a lot of the terms used here I am not sure what they mean.. I would also like to know why certain terms are used for describing something..

Here are a couple of examples of words I wasnt sure what they meant:

- calling people "vanilla"
-calling people "unicorns"

I think for many people who are new to the forums, this would be a useful thread for them... There were other terms I wasnt sure of their meaning but I didnt write them down. If there are terms you use frequently that a new person may not understand, please post them below. It'd be super helpful!

Thanks for the help!

plain as in sexually? It seems as though they were talking about people who were crusty and snobby? lol... Or is it plain looking? Also, where did this term come from (if you know).. and if it means plain sexually, are vanilla people those who just do it missionary? Sorry, so many questions!

In general, vanilla means plain or boring as in the ice cream flavor, so it will depend upon the context. So for example a vanilla porn is one where the person found it to be bland and conventional.

Unicorn I'm unsure of. You could try using something like urbandictionary.com to look up unfamiliar terms. Again, it often depends upon the context in which it is being used.

Unicorns are the rare bi-sexual girls that joins threesomes without drama - hence the reason they are called 'unicorns'. Mythological and likely don't exist. (At least that's what I gathered.)

Vanilla refers to others who are more conservative about sex and sexuality - the people you wouldn't talk about S&M or anal to. Usually those people are also highly political, highly religious, or highly sensitive (sometimes even highly politically correct).

Unicorn usually refers to a non-monogamous bisexual women. See the post by aag for references: link Although I've seen a few other more niche definitions for unicorn this is probably what there referring to.

Think of vanilla as being on the opposite end of the spectrum as kinky. So the vanilla side would be missionary, lights off, on a bed, to procreate etc and the kinky side would be whip chains leather dungeon etc. Inevitably what falls on one end of the spectrum as opposed to the other is going to be subjective.

Started from the front, and worked my way through them lol... I couldn't sleep so I just read and read and read. I am pretty sure it was a thread on threesomes

Congratulations on funniest mental image ever.

I also agree with Kindred in recommending urbandictionary for unfamiliar terms.
