How much do you pay for tailoring?

Contributor: Stinkytofu10 Stinkytofu10
I recently bought a jacket and a pair of pants that I wanted to get tailored. I got a price quote from the department store I bought them from and apparently the jacket is $35 to shorten the sleeves, and the pants are $12 (just for reducing the hem).

Anyone have any clue whether this is a reasonable price? How much do you pay for tailoring?

The last time we took in my husband's jackets, it was $25 for the sleeve shortening on each (I've never taken pants in). I think that may be reasonable, depending on where you live.

Sounds reasonable. For the jacket, they will have to split a seam somewhere to gain access to the inside of the sleeve/liner. Then they will have to split the seam where the outer material and liner meet at the end of the sleeve. They shorten the outer material and put it all back together. I will say that getting the liner and outer materials to line up while turned inside out it quite the task. I would probably charge more myself. Pants are a little high to me though, but I guess after they hem them they will press them too so it's not all bad.

Sounds about right. Though I do it all myself (though not too well!)

I don't get anything tailored. If it doesn't fit anymore, I just go out and buy something else. Granted, I don't buy brand new. My wife does the extreme couponing and she also shops at thrift stores. So I would have to say that I don't have the need for any of this
