How many other authors are here at EF? Have any of you written a book?

Contributor: K101 K101
I've took the day off to work on my novel--very exciting! I'm graduating this month and am kind of nervous about my writing career, but excited too. I was curious if any of you have written a book and if so, has it been published? Care to share? Also, do you have an editor or someone who voluntarily goes over your work for you before publishing? I know some people join writing groups. I've not done that, but my school offers a huge amount of support and help with your work. When my editor and I part, I don't have a clue who I'll get to help me out. I've had 2 people in mind and one is my partner! Yikes. Lol. He could at least give me some advice though. Do you have someone special to look over your work?

Feel free to share anything you want about your experience. I'd be happy to hear about other people's process of being published book wise. I've so far only been published with my short work in books or magazines.

I love to write and think I do it well... Sadly, I have yet to meet the person who will publish or back me.

Congrats, Kendra. I had interned at a small publishing house, and we had our own writers' group that met once a week to do "copy-edit" work (check facts and writing technical stuff like spelling and grammar). If you have a thick skin, a publisher's writers' group are the best people to get honest reactions of your work.

One author I know has a small group of "beta readers" that she enlists to help in editing her work. I think they're people that she went to college with and/or personal friends.

My aunt and uncle are both published authors - they usually edit each other's work, then send them out to another friend or two they've known in the industry for decades. They once told me that the first draft is written for each other, and they find each other's in-jokes to edit out before it gets to anyone else.

I write, but I don't have the skin to publish.

I have taken a several year break from writing, but before that I had several books and MANY shorter novellas published. I write erotica, erotic romance, and urban fantasy. I also worked in publishing for a few years as an editor and cover artist/designer.

There are tons of great writing groups out there..... I would STRONGLY encourage anyone with aspirations of publication to join one. Get a crit partner or two, and you will go from aspiring author to published MUCH faster!!

There is nothing like holding your very first book in your hands and seeing your name on the cover!!

I have a few books published, poetry, a Native American novel, and an interpretation of an old Native American tale for children.

I have a book of short stories, poetry and memoirs that need to be sorted out, added to and typed. I write the old fashioned way...in a notebook. I also have three notebooks that are full size novels. Published--heck no, but maybe one of these days I will be able to consider that option. Good luck, Kendra, you will be a great author!!

I'm not a book author, though I've had some magazine articles published. I don't actually like writing but I work for a magazine publisher so I tend to get forced to write.

I'm also a book editor at a children's publishing house in Canada, and I would definitely suggest getting your book edited professionally before sendng it out for publication. I looked over the slush pile of unsolicited manuscripts for a few months and it was easy to see who was serious and who was just a crazy lady with a story. Maybe even get an agent; we tend to take those manuscripts more seriously.

I've always wanted to write a novel, but I don't think it's ever going to happen. I've been published in local things and a few short story books, but I think that's probably the extent of my writing career. Well, except for thorough reviews.
