I'm interested in how many people have lived in another country for, say, at least one full month (that's a pretty low threshold, I know, but it should be enough to rule out most casual travel). Prior to serving in the US Army in Germany, I held resident alien status as a university student there.
Enormously different experience as a member of the US military compared to life as a civilian there. As odd as it may sound, American soldiers are incredibly shielded from the realities of life as a foreigner in Germany.
