I have to get rid of my chocolate lab that I've had for 2 years... I'm completely devastated.
Have you ever had to get rid of an animal?

Geez. I would be devastated, too. Why do you have to get rid of your dog? And what are you planning to do?

I had to find homes for my mom's dogs after she got too sick to keep living at home. I was lucky to find good homes for both of them.

I have not. I can imagine it would be incredibly painful to do so. I brought my kitty across the country with me, and am so glad I did. I'd never forgive myself if I left him behind, even with a good home.

For a dog that gives 'unconditional love' to its owner (and your best friend, I'm sure), it is very devastating. It is like a member of your family that you have to let go; forever. So sorry for your loss.

I have..I got rid of my german sheperd three years ago and im still not over it yet! We had him for 2 years too and was part of the family by far but when my sons father passed away he kinda lost it and wouldnt listen .He would drag us down the street when trying to walk him, etc. It was by far devastating getting rid of him and often still wonder how he is

Yes--when my daughter was born I had to give away the jealous cat...I was heartbroken and still cry when I think or her, she just loved me too much. That was 22 years ago....

Yes, I have.
I had to give up my basset hound, Pork Chop when I moved into my apartment ages ago. I couldn't afford the pet deposit, so my parents took him. I never took him back, though, after I could, because he was so happy with my parents, and I know that they love him and care for him just as much as I do. He's such a handsome grown man, now!
I've also had to give up my guinea pigs, Archie and Jughead.
I adopted those boys off of craigslist. I frikken loved them. They were my piggie boys! A few months after I got them, I started sneezing. I figured it was the hay, so I found ways to get around smelling it so much. That helped, but then the bumps started.
I noticed when I had the boys lying on my chest or arms or legs, I'd break out in tiny hives. I was allergic to their fur. I was SO devastated. when I came to this conclusion. There wasn't a way around it...
So, when I met my girlfriend, I researched piggie rescues in my area. None in my area could accept anymore animals, so I found on between my city and my girlfriend's city. When she came up to visit me before I moved, she packed the boys up and took them down there. I was so sad.
However, the boys got adopted within a week, and a few months ago I saw a picture of them with their new humans. Archie was SO happy. Apparently the four-year-old that they live with reads them a bedtime story every single night.

Just when our dog of 13+ years became too sick - we had to put her down.

I've never had to get rid of an animal but I did have to leave my two cats behind with my parents when I first moved out. Luckily I was able to get them moved in with me not too long after that.
Sadly they are no longer here, I had to have both of them euthanized at different times because somehow they contracted Feline Leukemia. It was a very sad and angry time for me but we have three other cats now and they are so awesome.

Yeah, I tried to give away 3-4 hamsters because I wasn't home most of the time to take care of them or give them human attention.

Yes, we used to have a third dog (currently have 2) that my husband found as a stray. He was a big sweetie, but he played way too rough with our 4-year-old so we needed to find him a more appropriate home.
