We are in Alabama now--but what a trip!! It was definitely an adventure getting here, and I was wondering if this only happens to us or if any others have had the same misadventures....
We left MT on a 3 day road trip to our destination. Everything went pretty good until I decided to bypass Ogden. About 22 miles into the self-imposed detour the road was closed. So we re-routed and came back and went through the city (I hate city driving, especially in his truck!) The rest of Utah was great.
We went down through Colorado and planned to cross via Montrose to Pueblo. Then go through Oklahoma to Memphis and down through Mississippi to Tuscaloosa, AL. Here's where it got all fucked up!!
Our GPS kept trying to backtrack up to Denver--we overrode it. We hit Montrose and saw a Detour sign....should have known!! Well, most detours are minimal and not a big deal--but there was no detour....or so we thought. When we started up the pass I should have looked at the map but did not.
When we are driving on the skinny two lane highway through a town from the Swiss Alps--I looked. We were on our way by Telluride Colorado--via the Million Dollar Highway. To Durango--to OPPOSITE side of the state we needed to go to. No way to turn around now, 10+ feet of snow-our 4x4 went out-and there was 171 more miles to go to the bottom. (Stop at convenience store 70 miles from Durango and grab me beer!!! He was driving now!!) So--
into Apache New Mexico over to Dulche and THEN decided to listen to the GPS and hit Albuquerque.... and Amarillo....and Memphis.
I drove after Amarillo and he was asleep in Memphis. At Midnight....had to work at 7am, hours after we should arrive in AL. I took the wrong damn exit!!! Was going to Jackson but I caught it about 15 miles into the trip and was able to hop over via a small rural road. (By now I am in the twilight zone and every horror movie I ever watched about lost travelers.....)
So I hit Tuscaloosa at 6am--complete downpour and thank god they called a rain day!!! Slept for 3 days before I was coherent....yeah, should have woke him up earlier to drive but HE was the one that had to work-not me.)
We are here now, weather is great--but we have to leave sometime!! I do NOT want to drive home. We have our big truck so we have to. Will listen to the damn GPS this round, though!!!
OOOHHHH!!!! We could not stay in the reserved motel due to our dog. Even though it is in the AAA book that they accept pets! So...had to go to a very cheap!!!! one to stay. It is ok, but not what I am quite used to on a set. It is a....very much econo motel. Just the bare basics--you need to BUY soap!!!! (Maybe a touch spoiled, but not that much!)
