So this morning I woke up with a charlie horse in my calf, worst way to wake up, and starting thinking about how my sister has never had one. So I was curious if there is anyone else that hasn't experienced having a charlie horse?!
Have you ever had a charlie horse?

Every once in a while I get one.

I only had a few growing up, but currently, a medicine I've been taking makes me prone to them.
When my potassium got a bit low recently, I found I got more frequent charlie horses, so you can always look at supplements to maybe help reduce the frequency.
They can be agonizing & I'm sorry for anyone who has them. It's interesting your sister never had one. Everybody on both sides of my family have had them at one time or another while growing up.

I experience it once in a while, usually when I'm stretching my legs right after I wake up in the morning. I've had fewer incidences ever since I included a banana in my diet every day, the fruit keeps my potassium level up.

I have very small arches in my feet, so my calves get charlie horses all the time, especially when I stretch first thing in the morning. I've gotten used to them so I can "catch" them now; as soon as I feel the slight tensing, I flex my foot and can stop it.

Yep, and it really sucks

Yes, most likely you are dehydrated. Pineapple juice is great prevention for muscle cramps.

Yes, I get them sometimes & they can be so painful. Lately I've been getting them during sex which really sucks.

I got them when I was younger. Nasty stuff.

Why do they call it a Charlie Horse?

Yes, I hate them! They make me scream.

I do every once in a while and it's been to the point where I've let out a cry. I have been woken up before by it. I just try to rub/relax the muscle, sometimes standing on the cool wood floor helps. I hate when it lasts for several minuets, I just grit my teeth!

This question has been asked here twice already. I remember in one of the threads it was asked in, I and a few others offered some advice on how we got relief from charlie horses, so in case you'd like to read those "tips" I thought I would put the links down below so you can check there too.

I'm not sure exactly which of those threads were the ones where a few of us told our remedies for relieving the charlie horse pains, but they might be helpful to ya. If you're wanting to give your sister some advice or just for the information in case it is helpful one day.

As a child I got them frequently - not so much any more. When I feel one coming on - I can usually react fast enough to stretch it out preventing any serious pain.

oh yes

I occasionally get those damn charlie horse cramps, often during sex in a complicated position.
Many years ago I was seeing a girl who still lived with her parents and they'd invited me over for dinner. We had wine with dinner, and a couple of cocktails afterward, her mom decided that I should sleep in their guest bedroom that evening rather than drive home. So after her parents went to bed my GF came and invited me back to her bed. We of course had sex (several times) and fell asleep. I awoke in the early morning with a terrible charlie horse in both my calves. I must have vocalized "ow ow ow" cause then both her mom and dad burst into her room to see me standing naked trying to stretch the calf muscles. My GF told her parents that I just had a cramp and to go back to bed... nothing was ever said about it after that.

All the time. I hat them, but with the joint issues I have and restless leg syndrome--yeah, not a good combo!!!

low on potassium?

I had an older sibling. So yes

I had my first one in quite a long time the other night. I had been lounging in the recliner and when I went to get up, all of the sudden, under my knee in my calf was excruciating pain. It took me a few minutes to actually get up and then when I did, the muscle was so sore and painful that I limped for the next five or so minutes until it went away.

I thought a charlie horse was specifically that someone punches you in the thigh and it triggers a cramp or a really deep bruise? But I've definitely woken up from a dream with a terrible cramp in my calf, too -- I think it was a nightmare!

Yes

I used to get something like that in my arms all the time as a kid due to the way I slept.
