When I was a kid people would get creative. We got small toys and penny candy, actual pennies, baseball cards, gum, and even a few religious pamphlets a time or two. Gotta love that Bible Belt.

One elderly lady on our street when I lived in Kansas City made popcorn balls every year. We all knew her, so we knew her stuff was perfectly safe - nobody ever died the previous year. New families that moved in always tossed her stuff out, which is really sad because she made yummy popcorn balls.

Pens, shaped pencil erasers, caramel apples, marbles, there were a lot of strange stuff in the '70's & 80's.

I remeber when I was a kid during Halloween, you would cover several blocks around your house, nobody ever messed with anything that was given out. If the porch light was off, you left the house alone, but if the porch light was on, it was good to go. Yes, we got some strange stuff by today's standards. Cookies, loose candy, apples, popcorn balls, and most of the other items listed above. It was a good time to be a kid, and it was fun until people started getting wierd and putting stuff into apples, or lacing candy with LSD. That really took the fun out of Halloween for a lot of kids.

We got all sorts of things in our bags growing up...

I opt to turn my light out and let my dog bark at the brats who decide to walk in my yard now. We did candy for a few years, but the greedy kids and the even greedier parents sent their kids to the door 3 or more times, so we stopped giving out anything. The (young) parents of a toddler sending their little princess to our door three times without bothering to even leave the driveway was the last straw! I got the door once, then the BF did...he said what a cute princess she was, I said I just got a little princess too...door rang, we both were there and it was the same little girl again! I shut off the light, locked the door and we were done for that year.

If they didn't get so blatant about it, and at least dress up I wouldn't mind doing it every year...but I get tired of greedy kids and teenagers holding pillow cases that didn't even bother to attempt a costume.

I read in my mother-in-law's "Good Housekeeping" (I think), that you're supposed to give tiny meatloaves away... they were "mummy" meatloaves or some shit. No thanks.

I've gotten popcorn balls in the past, and pennies. I can't remember if I've gotten an apple or not.

Last year my son got some candy and the last had put it in a bag with her business card. She was promoting herself as an Avon lady.

Growing up we had one neighbor who always gave out $1 bills. Needless to say he was the best house. Years later, when I took my daughter trick-or-treating, we went to a house that I guess ran out of candy, and instead of turning the light out, they were handing out soy sauce packets.

We only hand out mini candy bars because anything not sealed parents will just toss.

When I was little, we were only allowed sealed candy unless homemade treats came from family friends. My parents always checked our haul over for tampering before we were allowed to eat any.

COME ON NOW!! ...no one mentioned the ol' toothbrush and toothpaste!
I hated that, but someone in every neighborhood I lived in would hand that out. All smarmy.
I want to ask now if next year they will perform finger sticks and insulin injections? ..though that probably crosses that whole "needles in my child's candy!" line.

I've also gotten the pencils (at least they were, like, Halloween pencils..)
Gum, assorted candy, pretzels, popcorn balls, apples and candied apples, etc.

One year I pulled out a box of raisins and was pretty annoyed. greedy little sweet tooth, I was.

I remember getting cans of pop. It was the worst - not only do they make your bag way too heavy, but of course someone is going to drop their bag at some point and the can explodes and then all the candy is sticky and wet

My kids get candy most of the time. Occasionally they will get soda pop and chips.

I got some odd things. Bags of popped popcorn, oranges, toothbruch, temporary tattoos, sodas, juice packs.

My favorite thing to get was chocolate, and it's still my favorite to give out.

Has anyone else read that picture book (I can't remember the title) where the little boy goes trick or treating and is really disappointed because he keeps getting odds and end from around the house like a toothbrush and a bar of soap, and it's because he was going trick or treating a day early?
