Geophagy (Eating the Earth - Clay/Soil)

Contributor: Steve of Eden Steve of Eden
Yeah, lol I went there... I have never eaten dirt or clay since I can remember but I have been tempted a few times by the Earth... apparently it is actually good for you to eat certain types of soil or clay... they can cleanse and detox you... my local all-natural store has a detox clay... and I must say... I kinda want to try it...

anyone else feel this way?

How, exactly, have people learned that certain soils are good for you?! I want to know that.

I knew a girl who had a condition called pica who would eat things like dirt and clay. Be careful if you actually try eating anything like that because it can get you really sick.

I have never eaten dirt or clay. From what I have learned the entire "need to detoxify" thing is a myth. As long as you take care of yourself and your liver and kidney work properly, your body detoxifies itself regularly.

Most clays can cause severe constipation, in fact Kaopectate is made with a refined form of soil clay and Tums are as close to chalk as you can get. Both are constipating.

I'd talk to your physician before....eating dirt.

I read somewhere that there was a trend in the South (maybe around the Civil War time?) for people to eat dirt because they weren't getting enough of a certain nutrient.

Some animals will eat dirt, clay, or soft stones in order to gain more minerals. Perhaps we learned from these animals?

Actually, it's called Pica. A lot of pregnant women go through this.

My friend used to want to eat dirt. It's just like having a craving for certain foods when you're lacking that nutrient. It's just an instinct.

Ok people, I am obviously not going to eat dirt... if I did it would be a very small amount of detox clay...

The detox is actually a cleanse, since it is not digestable it acts as fiber would (as long as you dont shovel in 10 lbs)...

Pica is a general term for eating lots of different things... Geophagy is specifically dirt/soil/clay...

Also pregnant women do eat it sometimes and people in the south did...

I mainly just like the smell... it reminds me of mushrooms, potatoes, and other Earthy foods...
