Friends with an AI android? Do true AI deserve rights?

Contributor: Llewey Llewey
Not a sexbot, not an automaton, but a true artificial intelligence in a lifelike body. An AI with real, unique thoughts and a unique personality capable of growth and change. Think David from the movie AI, or more closely David (hmm...) from Prometheus. Additionally, do you believe AI beings with fully-functioning artificial "brains" and unique personalities would ever be deserving of rights? Or would they always be a a tool/toy? Are AI beings "people," or just "things" like how our computers are things?

Would it be too freaky? Would you be willing to have an AI friend? Would you be disgusted by their existence? Please share your thoughts; it's an incredibly interesting topic for me.

Eep! Accidentally made this poll single-response. Hopefully I can get that fixed. Sorry, everyone.

At 58 it's not something I need to worry about in my life time. Lifelike AI may be our fate - but I'm pleased that I will not have to face the moral dilemma because I'm 98% sure that I would be willing to accept them as human.

As a fan of Star Trek, I've long fantasized about having an android best friend like Geordie has with Data. Android are so amazing, I wish they were more developed and freely available in real life.

If an AI wanted to be my friend well I'm pretty bad at making friends so it's not likely I would turn one down even if it wasn't quite human.

That'd be pretty neat. As to whether they deserve rights, there's a lot of complexities that would go into yes or no, so maybe?
