Fresh, frozen, or canned, how do you take your "veggies"?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
We just did our monthly "big" shopping and I realized that I had not purchased a single "can" of any fruit or vegetables. I use 99% fresh and about 1% flash frozen, boil or steam in bag veggies or fruit.

However, I noticed the carts around me still packed with canned goods. What do you use?

We get a majority of our fruits and veggies through our local co-op and only canned when we need to. - K

I prefer fresh of course, but if it's cheaper I will buy frozen. Very rarely do I buy canned, unless I'm seriously on a tight budget.

I buy locally and organically. I am lucky enough that I live in city where everyday of the week there is a farmers market of local/organic farmers, butchers, cheesemakers and such in different parts of the city so I can stop by any one of them anytime I need something. It is also a small city so nothing is more than 10 or 15 minutes away from where I live.

It is a bit more expensive but I find that it is something that is important to me so I made changes in my life to make sure I can budget it in. As for herbs, lettuce, green onions and things like tomatoes, strawberries, and summer squash I grown on my own.

Cans. Faster. Easier. Not as good tasting but I don't think many veggies are that great anyway.

Fresh or frozen. If I can get it fresh, I buy it fresh. The only frozen veggie that is always in my freezer is peas, mostly because I can pretty much never find fresh ones. And I do like keeping frozen spinach around, because I have found it tastes better cooked than fresh does to me. I buy fresh if I want spinach for a salad and frozen if I want it cooked.

Fresh and in-season. Luckily, I live in the South, so we have various harvests throughout the year.

I prefer fresh but will do frozen. Rare occasions I will use canned corn only.

I prefer fresh as well, but frozen is better when you are mostly cooking for yourself. (It doesn't spoil like fresh.)

I usually buy frozen veggies, but I prefer fresh vegetables. Canned vegetables are only for when I run out of the fresh or frozen form of that specific vegetable and other vegetables can not be substituted.

Fresh, fresh, fresh. Cans for emergency. Only frozen are mixed vegetables. Oh some frozen spinach for ground beef, spinach, garlic and eggs, San Francisco Special from Zim's restaurant back in the day.
