I started getting flu shots anually once they went to the "dead" virus. I didn't have much to do with them when they were using the "live" virus. I normally get one now every year. For a while in the late 60's and early 70's I didn't get them because they caused my arm to become sore, and I needed to have full use of both arms at the time. I have a daughter who can't get the shot because it is made using chicken embryo to develop the virus, and she is allegic to eggs in all varieties.
Flu shot anyone?

I get it every year for free through my work because I'm a nurse. And plenty of the patients end up with the flu so I am around it a lot and have never gotten it. I really don't want to chance not getting the shot. But the flu vaccine is designed each year differently specifically for the 3-4 strains of the flu virus that are showing to pose the highest threat. People who get the shot are still susceptible to other strains of the flu virus.

I haven't gotten it before. I might this year. I am very prone to sickness.

I don't get flu shots, but I would not say I "don't beleive" in them. They usually work, as long as your body has time to mount the defense (it can take several days to more than a week after you get the shot to become resistant) and as long as the strains they are using in the vaccine this year are the strain you come in contact with.
If you get a shot for Influenza A and they were vaccinating for Influenza B, you won't be immune.
Our family has neurological problems and has reactions to many vaccines. I have gotten my one of my daughter's vaccinated ONE year, the year after she developed pneumonia from Influenza, as she was the "gateway patient" in our house every year, and got so sick. (Meaning she was usually the one who brought it into the house, the first one to get sick and passed it on to everyone else.) But, for I usually don't have my kids vaccinated. My kids have Neuro issues, from Tourette Syndrome to ADHD, to OCD to Aspergers (depending on the kid) and they don't need the additional neurological assault that can occur with the jolt to the immune system vaccines can cause.
So, usually no, we don't get them.

have never tried. Do not think I will ever try, unless I am weak from something else and my doctor wanted me to get one. We do not get sick very often.

I do every year for a couple of reasons. I'm a healthcare professional, so I'm around sick people every time I go to work. I need to protect myself and them. Also, as an immunizing pharmacist, I feel like I should set a good example for my patients and coworkers.

i never get flu shots, & the last time i had anything close to the flu was 3 yrs ago. it was the 1st virus i had gotten since my last flu/stomach bug 6 yr before.

I usually haul the whole crew of to get the nasal version. I usually still get sick, but it's not too bad.
09/07/2011
I may have gotten them when I was younger, but I haven't gotten them at all that I can really remember. It's not so much that I don't believe in them, it's more that I don't bother to go out of my way for them. I don't really like taking medicines at all and any time I do get sick I can usually knock it out in a day or two if I can sleep enough.

I refuse to get flu shots. Aside from the fact that I hate needles; I get sick either way..

Occasionally I have gotten the flu shot, but that was only when I was employed in a healthcare setting.
09/27/2011
I'd rather get the flu than be anywhere near a needle.

No way! You can keep your poison and Mercury!

Never had one, never had the flu...

I don't usually get the flu shot, but I did this year.

It sounds like some people here aren't understanding how flu shots work. A small amount of dead virus (or something like that) is injected and your immune system then creates antibodies for the non-active viruses injected. So your immune system does work as a result of a flu shot, just like it would if you contracted the flu. You just don't have to suffer through a full blown flu.
Also, each year they choose the five flu viruses they think are most likely to be a problem. But it could be that you become infected with a virus that wasn't in that year's flu shot. It doesn't mean you didn't receive protection for the flu strains the shot was meant to cover.
I'm supposed to have a flu shot every year since I have a damaged lung, but I don't always. less

I've never gotten one and I'm not dead yet, so I think I'll just keep on not getting them.
11/05/2012
I never get the flu during actual flu season, so I've never had the need. I only get the flu at the most ridiculous times when no one else seems to get it.
11/05/2012
I get one everyone year. My husband wasn't a believer in flu shots until he got the flu after our honeymoon and was in bed sick for the rest of Christmas and his winter break. The flu sucks, why not man up and get the shot? Having the flu will cost you money in soup, tissue, flu meds anyways.
11/05/2012
I get the flu about once every 5 years, so I usually don't get the shot. I try and avoid it as much as possible, because I'll be honest: I'm a big baby with needles. I hate shots and avoid them at all costs. When the toddler was getting a shot a few months back I was more scared than him, he went "It okay Dada, we get suckers!" He handled it better than I did, and I wasn't getting stuck. So I try and avoid the flu shot.
11/05/2012
I'm not convinced that flu shots are safe so I won't get one. I'll take my chances instead.
11/05/2012
No thanks, I'll take my chances.
11/05/2012
i am highly skeptical of shots, but believe elderly people should get them.
11/05/2012
I have a compromised immune system so my doctor said it's useless for me to get a flu shot cause my body probably won't make antibodies anyway.
11/05/2012
I think flu shots are a waste of time.
11/05/2012
I got it a few years ago. Haven't gotten this year yet.

As a pharmacist i see heaps of ppl every day that do or dont believe in flu shots. Ive go to admit my biggest gripe is this:
-a sniffle and a sneeze is not influenza.
-a sore throat is not the flu
-if u had a bit of a headache a fever... its probably not the flu.
These are mainly viruses that are "colds"
The flu leaves people really unwell and in bed. you feel like c**p and its really nt great.
In reality i dont get the flu shot... coz im scared of needles ahhaha but damn i would hate to get a REAL flu. Maybe if i did i might actually get the shot and avoid a flu (but might stil get a cold!!!0
