Ever used the patch to quit smoking?

Contributor: captainsgirl captainsgirl
My doctor just had the prescription for the patch filled. 85 whopping dollars. but hey if it works i save a lot more in the long run.
so I have smoke for 13 years, everyone in my family just quit and i am ready. i have one pack left, when its gone im starting.
the only tip my doc gave me was pop a mint when in need, distract myself at the obvious times i usually would smoke and cut a straw in half and hold it like a smoke if i need to for the habit.
so have any of you tried the patch? did it work for you? was it hard? any tips?
(i cant take chantex bc of my meds im on and i tried the e cigs and neithr worked, nor can i quit cold turkey)

I tried the patch. They failed miserably for me because the concentrated nicotine in the patch made my sensitive skin break out horribly. I previously quit for a year and a half (before stupidly picking them back up) and did it by using toothpicks. I would chew/suck a toothpick when I had a really bad craving. For about a week I went through a 100+ box of toothpicks a day but it helped me with the oral fixation and to keep my fingers busy.

I would love to know how it works for you and wish you the absolute best I need to quit again...

I quit quite successfully using the patch. You will want to switch it around from arm to arm, etc. because it will become rashy and what not if you don't. Just follow the other tips your doc gave you and use the patch as directed and you should do just fine. I wish you the best of luck with it, I know it can be super tough sometimes no matter what you try!

I started w/ the patch & it didn't work, then I used Wellbutrin and then later added using the gum. it was a 3 month process for me, but I was successful.

we don't smoke, but I tried to get my father in law to try the patch to quit smoking. Had no luck with him.

I tried the patches for lucid dreaming once.

I successfully quit 3 years ago with the help of Allan Carr's book 'The easy way to quit smoking'. Nothing else, No sweets, didn't gain weight, no chewing, never had any nicotine craving since.

I did it without the patch. I bought some herbs (loose tea; NOT black tea but plants like passionflower, catnip, and damiana,) and rolled my own no-tobacco cigarettes. I've been clean for almost three years! Was it hard? YES. It was also the best decision I've ever made. Seriously. My entire life has improved. I sleep better. My anxiety is better. Everything is better.

I tried everything; patch, gum, pills, more pills, mints, cold turkey.

What worked for me was electronic cigs.

I started out on a moderate amount of nicotine and gradually, over a year, worked down to none, vaping just a nicotine free liquid until I didn't need even that.

I"m now two years and 3 months smoke free and SO much happier.

This post gives me hope that I will be able to quit soon!!! I do not want my kids to pick up this horrible, expensive habit from me

I might have to look into that book...

I can't do the patch because of my lilly white (nearly albino) skin. I tried it once and had a mark for weeks from just one patch.

I quit for 6 months with the gum, but I can't chew gum and hate mint/cinnamon.

Ecigs worked for a bit.

In the end, it all boils down to willpower (your Resolve and Composure).

I have not used the patch and don't think I will. I have tried the pills and with my bi polar they made me sick and suicidal. It took me a bit to figure out why. This was when it was first coming out with them and the doctor's did not know much about the side effects. Let me tell you I was heated. So I am scared to try anything else right now.

I have used the Ecigs and did well for a couple of weeks. At some point I want to get a big kit with the juice refills. I think that would be better. I think also I would have went longer if the company I got them from was good. The cartridges were supposed to last me 3 months at least but it only lasted 3 days. I was heated. I had brought extra too. Then when I tried to contact them I never got a response back.

That's why I haven't tried it -- it's too expensive.

That's great that you're doing this, though! I hope you'll update and let us know how it works for you. I'd really, really like to know! Heck, you might could even do some articles on your journey!

I wish I could give you advice, but I have none. My mom and grandfather tried Chantix and they had very nasty side effects. My grandfather passed away shortly after, so I don't know for sure if it was even a little bit of help for him, but I know the side effects were getting dangerous and I was pretty sure he'd had to quit using it before he became ill anyways.

This is exactly what some of my family members experienced! The depression and negative thoughts. I even noticed a change in one of their attitudes and just a change in how they acted in general. They weren't happy. I'm honestly glad my family quit taking it, even though they continued to smoke, I was getting worried over the bad side effects.

I tried E-cigs too, and the ones I used weren't cutting it and was costing me double what I paid for smokes, so I had to ditch that scam. I'd like to try another one, a better one though! My dad started using an E-cig just last week. I'll have to remember to ask him how it's going for him. He's extremely strong willed though and has quit numerous times, so I know the E-cig would really be a big help for him.

See, I had the same problem as you! The cartidges were "supposed" to last and the package promises to save you all this money, and then... bam. You're out and you're craving a cig and you're disappointed as hell.

Which did you use because I too got in touch with the manufacturers who made ours and they promised to send a free one for our "troubles" when I just wanted my $ back, but said I'd just agree to the free one. The scamming assholes never sent it! I bet it was the same company you dealt with!

Thanks I was trying to remember what those darn pills were called. The Chantax sucks and are no good of course now they have what side effects and stuff they have.

Sorry to hear your family members experienced the same symptoms as well. I hope that it did not have a effect on your grandfather. That would be so sad to find out but you can never tell.

Mine was thru Bulldog I actually got it at a place called Waterbed and Things. They said I could not return it there and had to call the company but I got no where. I too ended going back to smoking as well. That is why at some point I would like one of the higher priced ones with the juice refills that way I know it will work instead of the ones they sell in the stores.
