Ever lost luggage?

Contributor: MaryExy MaryExy 06/30/2011

I'm curious to see how often this actually happens and whether it's ever fixed.

Is it really common for luggage to be lost on plane trips? Do you take the chance of it being lost or stolen? Do carry-ons ever get stolen?

I've never had luggage lost (and I've traveled from NY to Alaska and back, from NY to Florida and back, from NY to México and back, from NY to...) but I've heard of it happening, recovered and not. I have a policy that if something is that precious to me I keep it in my carryon, which doesn't leave my side--or I just don't take it with me. There's very little that I consider to be irreplaceable that I find necessary for a vacation. And I always pack a full day's clothing, a pair of comfortable shoes, and a swimsuit in my carry-on. Just in case.

I've never had luggage go missing in a hotel, on a cruise ship, or in any other lodging.

We have had luggage go missing after being checked twice. Once when we went to a wedding out of state, and the second time when we went skiing out west. On both occasions, the bag was found and delivered to where we were staying within 48 hours. A huge inconvenience, but all worked out in the end.

I didn't think it could happen that easily, but then sure enough, my best came over from England last summer & her whole family's baggage was lost for the entire 3 weeks they were here on vacation.

Whenever I fly I'm always staying in my destination for awhile so I don't have much of a choice about checking my luggage. Thankfully I've never lost any, but until I get my stuff back in my hands I'm always nervous that something will happen to it.

I have had my luggage delayed before. I know, how does that happen. But I had to go back to the airport to pick up my luggage when it showed up 8 hours latter.

My luggage got lost once, but luckily it was returned to me the next day. I try to avoid checking luggage as much as possible, and put all the important things in my carryon when I do.

I lost a suitcase when I moved from Miami to Atlanta (the 2nd time) and it was recovered the same day. It had a good 3/4 of my wardrobe in it. When it was recovered, we learned that the reason it was lost was because they had handled it so poorly at some point that the luggage was basically destroyed, except for the main portion of suitcase.

I've known people who have had their luggage delayed, but never lost and gone forever.

It must happen more than you would think, though, as there is an entire (quite large) store that sells unclaimed baggage. They even found the original "Hoggle" puppet (muppet?) from the movie Labyrinth. He's not for sale, though, just displayed with other interesting finds.

My luggage got lost once. I was flying from Seattle to D.C. It got lost in LAX after my connection flight got changed due to engine problems. It took about 24 hours to get it back.

My luggage was lost when I was flying to Ireland for my study abroad program. It took Aer Lingus few days to track it down in Amsterdam. Fortunately, my mother had suggested I pack some clothes in my carry-on just in case, so I was not wearing the same clothes for 4 days.

I will never, in a million years ever check a bag again. I've known people getting bags lost on planes, and always have had them recovered, unfortunately one girl I knew just flew over seas, and her bag hasn't been recovered, it's been over a month!

I however was lucky enough to get my CARSEAT back, unfortunately it was 4 days later. We flew to visit family, and I didn't check the carseat or stroller. I didn't want them getting lost, I'd be screwed. So I took it through the terminal, and they have that little carry cart that they take from you at the door and stick underneath in the luggage department. It basically goes from your hands to underneath the plane.. We landed, and they brought out the stroller...no carseat. It was the same lady who put it away for me, and she was dumbfounded. It just "disappeared" she said. Then they figured someone else must have grabbed it while getting off.Do you know what she offered me? Airplane wings for my kid.
Now it's replaceable, but how do you get to a store that sells carseats when you are in an airport without one to transport your child in? I never left the terminal when we got off the plane. I sat there and let my 1 1/2 year old at the time scream bloody murder, and run wild.We had to wait for daddy to be picked up, and get to a store, buy a car seat, and come back to get us. The lady at the station was less than thrilled with me.

When we got home our carseat was sitting on our front doorstep.

Oh yeah, and on the plane ride home, I made them store my stroller and the carseat(base and all) inside the plane with me. They told me they couldn't do it, but I have seen people with guitars and things of that nature storing them on the plane so they don't get mishandled.

I only fly maybe twice a year, and I almost always pack lightly so I can have a carry-on and not worry about baggage fees and retrieval.

The first person I ever knew to lose luggage was a high school friend who went to Moldova for a two-week long mission trip one summer. Everyone's luggage made it through except hers. They were in an extremely poor area in the middle of the nowhere, so there was no dropping into Walmart for fresh skivvies and $5 pants. Luckily she shared some clothes with the rest of the team and got her luggage back about a month after she returned from the trip. The airline tracked her luggage as it came back to her, and it ended up on at least 3 different continents before it finally arrived in South Carolina.

I've lost luggage multiple times. I organize the suitcase into smaller plastic bags for easy packing and the real fun part is when your luggage arrives but your suitcase is partly empty, your underwear mini-bag is missing, and you've got a 'bag inspected' tag inside it! Damned TSA. Really. They lost all of the underwear we brought in 'inspecting'!

Luckily I have never had such an issue. I try not to bring anything valuable in the first place, and carry as little as possible so whatever I bring as a carry on is easy for me to watch out for.

I just know about my friend having his check-in luggage lost on his trip to and around Europe, luckily he got it eventually before leaving to his next destination. I would be so upset.

I have lost luggage before, I have had luggage get damaged before, I had pieces missing from my luggage as well (e.g. I know I packed a camera, but when I checked the luggage after picking it up from the airport the camera isn't there anymore...)

It's always something going wrong with the checked luggage. I have American Express travel insurance, and I save my receipts so I get reimbursed for the items lost and the luggage delay/lost insurance claim.

I just took a flight and when I got onboard, I placed my "carry on" rolling suitcase in the overhead. When we got to the destination I looked into the WRONG overhead (the one across the isle), since it was open that THERE was my suitcase. I grabbed it and left.

Not till I got home and opened it, did I realize it belonged to someone else. Thankfully, I called the airline right away. So did the other person and by the next day, we BOTH had our correct luggage. I had two REALLY nice strands of pearls in there, and a solitaire 3 Ct diamond necklace (was going on a brief social trip)....and they too were returned untouched.

The world still has HONEST people!!!!

I had my bike carrier lost on the way back from France. The airline eventually found it a few days later, but by that point the the late charges to the rental company were so expensive that I could have bought my own. On the plus side since it happened coming home rather then to my destination so I was able to use it for the race that I came to compete in. Being 5'2" it would have been rather difficult to get a proper road bike in my size in the middle of the french countryside.

I also had a bag delayed in Australia, but that wasn't as big of a deal as they brought it to my hotel a few hours later.

Finally, I lost my keys somewhere between my home and Chicago a week ago. My best guess is that they came off my carabiner when I was trying to get comfortable in my seat. I doubt I will see them again.

On the whole,I try not to check bags, not because I worry that they will get lost but because paying for the convenience to me seems ridiculous. That said, there are alot times when I don't have a choice, like with the bike,so in those cases I just try to have as non stop a flight as possible, since that's where I figure most of the disappearances happen.

Lots of delays, like I said if your luggage is delayed or lost you get reimbursed if you have American Express travel insurance. I think it's $200 for delay and another $200 if flight is cancelled, and if your luggage is lost you submit receipts and they reimburse you for the receipts.
