East Coast Earthquake

Contributor: Tori Rebel Tori Rebel
An earthquake, apparently 5.8 on the Richter scale just hit the east coast, centered in DC. It's just hitting news now but I'm in NJ and we felt it, as did friends of mine from the NJ coast, Philadelphia, and Boston.

Anyone else?

Im in california but my dad just told me about it. Sheesh earthquakes are no fun, especially if they are in the middle of the night and you have no idea whats going on.

This one was little, at least in NJ...just a tremble running through our office building. But I have coworkers in Baltimore that said it was far worse there.

I'm in Iowa, had some friends just post to facebook that live in the area that told me about it. Watching the news coverage on CNN now.

Everyone on my facebook on the east coast felt it. A lot of new yorkers especially.

I have friends in Boston that felt it, as did my mom in South Carolina (northernmost portion), but all very mildly. It was much worse toward the center.

I'm only about 50 miles away from the center of it. I'm at work right now (at the porn store across the street from an airport) and sometimes I can feel vibrations when big trucks drive by but this was crazy. All of the glass pipes in one of our cases were shaking. Bottles of lube in the other case are teetering on the edge of the shelf.

I wasn't sure what was happening. I got really freaked out and it took me a minute to realize it was an earthquake. I ran outside to see if anything was going on.

Apparently it was a 5.8 magnitude that was just outside Richmond, VA

I'm just outside of DC and felt it. The entire building shook. It wasn't too bad in retrospect, but pretty damn scary while it happened. I hope everyone is safe.

So far there haven't been any reports of anything too devastating, just a lot of panic. Everyone I know that works in NYC was evacuated from their office buildings.

Some folks down here in Georgia felt it, although I didn't.

I know, right?

This sort of thing doesn't happen on the east coast very much. I had no idea what was going on. At first I thought a plane was about to crash or something was wrong in my store before I ran outside and saw that the ground was shaking, too.

I didn't. I'm in Atlanta. Wonder if those jerks in Congress shat their pants. Geez, I'm evil today.

The earthquake was upgraded to a 5.9 to 6.0 - that's a pretty big one, especially for the east where building codes have limited seismic content. It'll be interesting to see how the major monuments in DC fared.

Is it the GOP complaining it's leaning too far to the left...?

I think this quote from CNN correspondent Alison Kosik explains New York's reaction to the quakes. "Traders in the New York Stock Exchange felt the shaking and shouted to each other, 'Keep trading!'"

I was tying to lay down with my kids to take a nap.... then the bed started swaying... my initial reaction was ooOOooo... promptly followed by something along the lines of "Oh shit!"

The kids didn't seen to mind, they were like, "weeeeee" lol

Surely it would have swayed - wonder if there will be a permanent tilt like the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

I'm in northern Pennsylvania and our whole building shook, but there were people less than a mile away who didn't feel anything. Our boss sent us home early because we are on the 15th floor.
