Earliest Memories

Contributor: Penguin Penguin
My girlfriend and I love having random convos. We got on the topic of going to preschool. I never went, but i did go the kindergarden where i remember my first memory.

I went to school the first day and the teachers made my grandma take me home because I didn't want to stay and make chickens out of popcorn seeds (the activity for the day). They were like pasting them on paper. I was screaming and crying uncontrollably. For some reason I remember this clearly.

What is the first memory that you can remember?

Oh man, mines not a good one...

I was only about 2. So I only remember one specific moment, the rest is just via what I've been told.

Basically mom had been baking something, and gave me the wood spoon to lick...and I took off running. Why they didn't actively stop me I don't know. It boiled down to I tripped, the spoon lunged to the back of my throat and I was gushing blood. I was very fortunate that A. it was a wood spoon not metal. And B. it was the spoon portion in my mouth not the handle.

They rushed me off to the ER, where they did whatever it was.

The only portion I actually remember is the doctor coming in and trying to give me some pink medicine..

I had just turned 3, and my mother telling me she was pregnant with my brother. She brought out 'The Miracle of Life' book - the one TimeLife did with all those color photographs of gestating babies - and she sat down and showed me what exactly was going on inside her body with my unborn brother. She was a labor and delivery RN at the time, so she was actually quite clinical.

I knew I was conscious before then with only vague flashes now of being an only child and playing with my cousins, but that memory of my mother's announcement and teaching is the first one that really took.

I remember being in a crib. And it really freaked my mom out because I remember being in a crib at right around a year old because I can describe my room I was in in my parents 1st apartment and my dad coming in and carrying me for a few minutes early every morning before he went to work and before my mom was up. I remember holding onto the bars in the crib and I also remember being in a crib a little after that at my grandmother's house because my parents had separated for awhile and my mom moved herself and I back to their house.

My boyfriend also remembers being between a year and a half and two years old because he was hospitalized for pneumonia at that age and remembers being in the hospital.

I think the earliest was when I had grabbed a razor blade and cut my middle finger open on my right hand. I think i passed out from blood loss because after seeing all this blood gush out I don't remember anything. Dad told me he was off work that day and had rushed me to the ER while a rag was tried to my finger to keep it from bleeding.

Mom had left the blade out and I picked it up because it was shiny.

I still have the scar. Needed stitches and a metal cover over it. It can be seen in some home videos of me.

I also remember the time mom would dye my hair (I was only like 2 or 3) and one time she got POed at me and shoved my face under the water and wouldn't let me up until I almost drowned. I was afraid for years after to put my head underwater (my grandma said I screamed bloody murder when I got my hair washed in the sink) until the lady at YMCA who taught me to swim worked with me one on one and I slowly got over it. (I still need a noseplug, though.)

Other memories.... getting a blister on the bottom of my foot.... The house being so full of trash and newspapers you could walk from one end to the other without touching the floor (mom being a pack rat due to schizophrenia caused that), getting pinched all the time by this one boy in kindergarten... And i guess a few others.

I only seem to remember bad memories. Since having pneumonia one summer back when I was 12 or 13, my memory hasn't been so well (I had a temp of 104 or 106 and was rushed to the ER so they could bring it down) and I have a hard time remembering things, so i always have to write everything down now. And I lost a lot of older memories, too, except for the real bad ones. I forget people I don't see in a year or so unless they really impacted my life, etc.

And no, I didn't have a very good mother.

That all kinda sucks Sweetie Despite one of my first memories being of my dad being nice, he kinda stopped that once I could walk and talk. My second memory of him is him dumping a can of beer over my head in my grandparents living room when I was 3 and wearing a brand new frilly dress I was SO proud of because he said I was putting my toys int he wrong place. But since he didn't live with us at the time, he actually didn't know I'd done nothing at all wrong and had cleaned up right, and he ruined a 3 year old little girl's current favorite possession just because he was (and is) drunk bastard.

My earliest memory is playing in the snow when I was three. My brothers and my dad were making a snowman while I played nearby.

Around the same time I also remember the family dog, a dalmation, filling the entire room. From my memory he was that big. My parents eventually gave him away. We were too afraid of him. He was just too hyper for small children.

Honestly? I can't recall. But then I don't think about the past all that often anymore. And I'd have to dig back really far to try and find my earliest memory. lol

My earliest memory is of this strange video my older brother and sister had brought home called Where I Came From. There were all sorts of weird cartoon shorts, including a baby falling into a man's beer, and a cartoon of two cats in a bed having sex under a blanket O_o

I think I was about three years old.

I have many memories of when I was little, but it is difficult for me to associate an age with those memories.
