We know that, of course, there are people with dogs and cats that seem to coexist fine, but our daughter wants to get a dog and a cat at the same time, and I am just not sure it is a good idea. How many of you have BOTH pets and do they get along, or just "co-exist" under the same roof..or worse yet, antagonize each other, which is what has me worried. I think two dogs or two cats is a better idea. YOUR TAKE? We have NO CLUE, since we are purely DOG folks. Never owned a cat...ever.
Dog People, Cat People...but how many own BOTH, and do they get along, really:?

We have both! I'm really a cat person, though! We have quite a few cats and a small beagle/daschund mix, so all of our animals are about the same size! Our dog was raised by cats so it usually acts like one!

I have one cat and one puppy. Most of the time they get along, but the puppy (being an extremely dominant German Sheperd) likes to dominate the cat by standing over her and biting. He is only allowed near her under supervision for now.

4 dogs, 3 cats. They get along pretty well and seem to like each other when we are not looking. I found two cats cuddling the bigger dog and the other cat was playing with the little dog.

I have two dogs and two cats. My dogs are an old border collie and a relatively young American pit bull terrier. The cats are your standard white cats. They all get along fine.

My dog has been raised with cats since he was a puppy, so he absolutely loves them - he can't imagine a better playmate. It's actually a very good idea to get a puppy and a kitten (less than six months old) at the same time so they grow up together - the dog has a playmate and the cat won't be bored. And they'll grow up thinking their pack/pride is normal.

A close family friend has a whole pile of animals who get along like magic. At first it was just a cat and a dog, but now she's up to 3 cats (all adult males who coexist fine with each other as well) and 2 dogs. It's brilliant

we have a cat & 2 dogs (female dog, female cat, & male cat). our male cat & the dog get along very well. you could call them best friends. our female cat is a diva & tolerates them both. i actually think she likes the dog more than she likes our male cat. she's gotten much better, but our male cat & our dog are inseparable. he was the same way w/ our last dog, too.

The cat & dog are married. They love each other so much & are lost without each other.
Though (and I actually think this is what's cute about it), the dog wasn't that nice at all to the last cat, and I think the guilt he felt when she died caused him to treat the new cat with a lil more respect, and she's just so adorable & loves him so much, he can't help but to love her back.

So deathly allergic to cats that it has ruined my entire perspective on those animals. Some are cute, but I find most ugly and almost puke at the sight of them. I literally almost died once at a party with some friends who had only one cat. It was awful.

I have two dogs and I love them both to death. My husband wants to buy a third but we're really unsure how a puppy would do with an older aussie and an old chihuahua. Probably not well.

My mom has a dog who enjoys chasing the cats around and grabbing at them and stuff. Because he does this, one of my cats is very nervous and jumpy. I don't like having to see him sneak around the house so he can at least eat without the dog barking at him. My cat has honestly been through enough, having been in my apartment while it was on fire, so I won't be getting any other animals that he'd need to be around.

A couple years ago, I was living with my parents and we had 5 cats and two big labs. The dogs didn't really bother the cats because they'd been raised with them, and the cats were always used to dogs being around. In my experience of having several dogs and cats at once, was that the dogs never really seemed to care too much about the cats. They'd occasionally go up and nudge them and play with them in a kind way, especially when the cats were running around crazy. We had more trouble with the cats harassing each other than we did the dogs.
It's best if the dog and cat are brought up together so they can get used to the other's presence.

We have both. We had our cat first...he's three years old. We got a lab puppy about eight months ago. Our cat hates her, and they are by no means friends...but the puppy doesn't bother him much. She tries to sniff the cat and the cat tries to beat her up for it, haha. She hasn't tried to eat him or anything...I wouldn't leave them alone together though.

We recently lost a 15 year old cat who helped raise 3 of our dogs. OF the 3 dogs, she (the cat) knew 2 of them as puppies, so they got along fine. The third dog was a rescue, and did not like the cat at all. The third dog is still alive and misses the cat every morning, as that was their special play time. We also have two other dogs who were tolerant of the cat, although not as attached to the cat since they were adult dogs when they entered the house.
I agree that getting the dog(s) and cat(s) when they are young and letting them grow up together is the best plan. Also try to go with females if possible since they seem a bit less aggressive, even if they are a bit more territorial.

I don't have any cats myself, but my dog loves cats. My groomer rescues cats, so there are lots of cats in her shop, my poodle greets them all like long lost friends every time he arrives there. One of the cats always crouches by his legs while he's being groomed, and my dog is very careful, making sure not to step on the cat by accident and hurting it.
A friend of mine has 3 cats and a dog. Whenever the cats fight, her dog will act as referee breaking up the fights, barking and nudging them away from each other. It's an amusing sight!

I've always had dogs and cats coexist happily. It works especially well when they are both brought into the home together as puppies & kittens. They grow together, learning to respect & love each other. It's so cute.

I'm a cat person, my partner is more of a dog person. We don't have any pets currently, but we've both had households with cats and dogs without issue before.

Animals all have different personalities and it can be really hard to figure out how they will react to each other. A few years ago we had two cats and a dog. One of the cats loved the dog and they would play together all the time while the other cat would smack the dog in the face if she came within two feet of him.
I also had a dog and cat when I was younger and the dog liked the cat much more than the cat liked the dog. It seems to me that if you get a very playful cat you should be fine, since most dogs tend to be playful anyway.

I have a dog and two cats. The cats tollerate the dog, but don't get along with her all that well.
