Does your cat like to eat anything unusual?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
In another discussion I started on pet names, there was the mention of cats eating unusual foods. A cat I had used to love broccoli & my mom's cat will attack her, or knock over the cup to get some SlimFast! My mom also had a cat who loved tomato soup. What unusual things have any of your cats every loved to eat? (I consider bugs, or anything that moves & tempts them, to be normal for them to try and eat, ha ha !)

We have a cat that will eat almost anything you give him. If you give him chips or cookies or anything, he'll eat it!

My cat loves General Tso's Chicken- even when we order it extra spicy. She will also eat french fries if they are fresh and nicely salted.

When I was a kid, we had a cat that loved canned corn and glazed donuts. If we weren't looking that damn cat would jump up onto the kitchen counter and tear open the bag to get to those donuts.

One of my parents' cats loves eggs, pasta, beans, and I can't remember what else.

On a related note, please remember cats are highly allergic to onions, garlic, and chocolate so don't ever feed them those.

We had a cat who also loved glazed donuts, turned out it was the smell of the yeast in the dough!

@ bayosgirl, thanks for mentioning that for everyone! I tend to forget that not everyone has been around cats their whole lives & already knows these things. Thanks for the reminder!

I know lots of cats like eggs, but the pasta & beans are unusual! I bet you could add rice to your list, am I right? I have had lots of cats who like rice.

My cats will eat most kinds of human food. One of mine is especially fond of cleaning leftover pizza crust crumbs off plates.

Well besides mint things like toothpastes, minty gums, etc. I don't think anything else. One of them sometimes chews my freaking aloe vera stalks! She's weird. She'll bite down on it & then she's fine. She won't chew it or anything. Well, actually once they both ate the heck out of a bouquet of flowers! They'd both stick their heads into the bouquet, shake it back and forth and tear off a bite. LOL

Mine too! They love this stuff. One of my old ones would drink sweet tea from my glass. And once and only once, the youngest drank some of my coffee. She never did it after that day though.

@ Hummingbird & Kendra, my mom's cat is insane for SlimFast. The vet & we decided that it's the smell of the vitamins in it that appeals to them. I noticed when I eat nutrition bars, that they go after some of them, as well.

@ joolie, The cat I use as my avatar loves all dairy products; I call her my little dairy queen! If she hears me open the fridge & pull out the shredded cheese, she will come running from wherever she was sound asleep & demand her portion! She's the only cat I've had that never gets digestive problems from dairy, no matter how much she eats!

My mom made some asparagus with some sort of lemon glaze and it was awful, tasted like Pledge. Nobody wanted to eat it including my mom. My cat actually got up near the dinner table and snatched one. So my mom was like hmmm and gave him a serving full and he ate them like they were the best thing ever lol.

He also likes eating spiders. And pieces of Cheese chex mix and Cheeze Its.

I've heard of cats that like asparagus & of course, cheese flavored goodies. Mine hunt spiders, but I don't think they particularly like the taste of them, it's the moving that attracts them & gets them to bite. They don't eat any dead ones, but maybe the flavor is different between live & dead?

My orange cat will try to eat anything, non-food items included. Mostly he really tries to eat as many fuzzballs and pieces of cellophane plastic as he can, poor thing is going to kill himself one of these days eating something he shouldn't

I have had cats who go bonkers trying to eat rubber bands & we always had to make sure there weren't any around.

Another cat was into tinsel! We found out the one year we kids convinced Mom we needed to put those icicles on the Xmas tree. Well, one cat was eating them, but we didn't know it till we saw a strand dangling out her rear end! We were chasing her all over the house, laughing & trying to pull it out. We finally caught her & removed several lengths over the next few days! Thank goodness she passed them without incident!

C's cat (soon to be mine, too) loves peanuts. I also had a cat who loved coffee until she stuck her nose in a really hot cup of it.

My cat seriously won't eat hardly anything but his cat food and occasionally some tuna.

Two weird things he eats sometimes are: the puppy's food, and my bird's feathers. (Those usually make him throw up, so I do my best to keep them picked up but they literally go EVERYWHERE!)

My two cats tend to chew on stuff, but not eat it. Like plastic...my female loves to chew on plastic. Apparently she likes the noise, and my other cat loves to nibble on our clothing. I wonder about those two.

But I did have a cat that drank coffee o_O he would have a cup every morning with my mother, well not an entire cup, a lap from a dish and that was it.

Chilipepper's cat liked coffee, too! I haven't heard of that before. Was there was no dairy in it as an obvious lure?

No dairy - my ex-step-father always drank his coffee black, so that's all my cat ever had.

That is amazing! Something about it must have smelled good, but to still want it after tasting it, that is what is so interesting. I understand why a dog would like unusual things because of their omnivorous nature, but carnivores liking these odd foods is, well, odd!
