Does chicken noodle soup really help a cold, or are we brainwashed by grandma?

It's always helped me. It's one of the few things that does, actually, it clears up my sinuses.

I think that it does!

It really is supposed to help. The soup is full of vitamin A, and the heat and moisture are good for the sinuses when you are eating it.

Soup in general helps. But I think that real chicken stock has a lot of good nutrients that help your immune system. So it's not so much the soup itself, but the fact that it has chicken stock.

I think it does, one both a physiological aspect and a psychological aspect. It's comforting and reminds us of when we were little. The warmth helps perk you up a bit and the nutritional value is pretty solid. It keeps you hydrated and that's also a plus.

Agreed, I think that this is it too. I've had matzoh ball soup that my mum made, and it's done the same.

I think the warmth helps your body keep its temperature up. Your body fights infection better when you get a fever.

I think so.

It doesn't really help that much.
Especially since when most people say chicken noodle, they mean soup from a can with a red label.
There are virtually no truly valuable nutrients in chicken stock. What chicken stock does have, though, is an asston of salt content.
The salt is soothing on the throat and can help open your sinuses a tiny bit (when you breath in the salty steam as you drink it/put your face over the bowl). Other than that, I really don't think there's much immune system boosting going on at all. There are MUCH more nutritious foods to eat--even if the soup is homemade with high quality ingredients.

Physically I'd have to say no, but it's good for the soul and the human mind is a complex thing so if you believe it will help it often does. ^_^

I only say yes it does, because when I'm sick, it's one of the few things with substance I can keep down.
12/10/2011
It definitely does. The vapors as you're eating it help clear up your sinuses. And it's full of vitamins and nutrients to help your immune system battle off whatever's got you down.

I make it completely from scratch (I've always got frozen stock around) with whole grain noodles and all that, so I'd say it's pretty healthy for me (Especially when you factor in all of the veggies I like to add) and like everyone else said, it clears up the sinuses.

It's never helpped me - it's just food.
12/10/2011
I think its one of those things where you think it will so it does, the placebo effect.
12/10/2011
It seems to help me, but I don't really like it.
12/10/2011
It's a comfort food. I really don't believe it as any healing effects though. I think it's simply comforting. Kind of an "all in the head" thing, IMO.
12/10/2011
It does, IF it's real chicken soup made with homemade broth. The canned stuff is full of sodium and none of the good stuff found in real broth/stock.
