How many in the EF community use (or have heard of) Linux? What distro (distribution)?
Do you use Linux?

I use Ubuntu (always up-to-date, so currently, 11.10) and absolutely love it! I have a second computer that I dual-boot with Windows because some programs required at my school don't have Linux support , but I shudder every time I boot into Windows.

I don't really have a good reason for not wanting to use Linux other than it's just easier for me to use Windows. I actually like Windows 7 a lot more than I thought I would, although bouncing back and forth between XP and 7 from my laptop to my desktop makes me a little nutty sometimes.

I guess I am behind, I have no idea what it is.

I do. Though I use 10.04 LTS (Which is currently Lynx 'til Pangolin takes over in 2013.)
I'm just not keen on Unity, I know you can go and install GNOME and switch back to it, but it doesn't have the same UI as GNOME in Lynx as it's an updated version.
I use Linux about 99% of the time, and then that 1% of Winblows usage is when WINE is suffering regressions on a certain program.

I have heard of it,but I am so used to Windows programs that I will be sticking with that.

I don't know anyone personally who uses Linux. Frankly, I worry too much about compatibility issues with a different OS.

Desktop: Linux, Laptop: Windows 7.

I dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu 8D
It's convenient

I have an ubuntu partition, but I haven't used it in a while because my computer heats up too much using it for some reason.

Blech. Linux.

Yeah, Unity is annoying! In LTS I switched back to Gnome, but Unity appears to be taking over, so I forced myself to make the switch. It's actually not so bad now that I'm used to it, but my number 1 reason for missing Gnome is that my top bar applets are gone :-(

not on my computer

I don't use it because it's a pain. Windows is perfectly user-friendly, and it came with my computer. Besides, I would have issues with my music collection, which is all in iTunes format, which Linux can't play as far as I know.

I've used it before, but I just don't have the kind of app support that I would want.

It's an operating system, like Windows or Mac OS. The reasons people seem to like it so much is because (1) it's open source, which basically means that it's free and people can alter it as they please, and (2) the seemingly-unlimited customization opportunities it has. There are lots of programs that allow you to use Windows programs in Linux, which makes it very compatible with Windows files and programs. It's intimidating to many people because using it requires at least a basic understanding of all the confusing behind-the-scenes coding that most people never use in Windows or Mac. But once you get the basics, it's great. And it's designed so that if you mess it up, it's easy to fix/reinstall. Oh, and viruses are virtually nonexistent!!

I kind of want to again, but I'm already dual-booting Windows 7 and 8 (developer preview, and soon beta).

Oh, 8 is gonna feature those quicklaunch-type boxes and such, right? Is it as cutting-edge as they say it'll be? Or are you not at liberty to discuss it ?

Desktop is running Vista (came with it OEM) and despite my attempts to convert the Mrs, her expert-level and intense usage of Excel prevents her signing off on Libre or OO, so her laptop has XP.
Just used the CAINE LiveCD in a VirtualBox machine on the desktop to recover a friend's hard drive yesterday.
I didn't care for the new UI on the netbook, so went back to 2D. Definitely less real estate and I don't want huge icons for everything

I know exactly what you mean. I dual-boot 11.10 and M$7 on my netbook and in both environments, my screen space is precious! I use lots of Greasemonkey scripts to optimize space, like in my e-mail page. As much as I disliked Unity, the dashboard does make things easier for netbook use. Of course, it all depends on your needs, I guess. I use mine exclusively for school, so I just need decent browser capabilities and Basket for note-taking.

I am on eden with Ubuntu 11.10 right now and downloading 12.04 alpha. I love linux It would be the primary OS on my desktop, but it is not compatible with my tv tuner and the applications I use to convert my media file. I am not looking forward to windows 8. The new UI is awful I cant stand it. They better create or keep the possibility of switching back to the old UI or Windows 8 is a no go for me. Windows got it perfect with windows 7, why are they rocking the boat with 8. Stupid microsoft!

I'm a Linux guru but my primary OS is FreeBSD. I use a Mac for multimedia creation and use Windows mainly for games.

Nothing beats good product for good prices, and I think Windows isn't worth it for the money, considering there are secure, free options out there. Although, the fact that they're so widely-used means that a lot of software caters to Windows.
01/05/2012
I will not use it, because I am so fine with Windows and missed nothing. If I want more secure I will go to Macintosh not linux.
01/05/2012
I want to, but dont have the time or energy to play around with it.
