I'm not sure, South Africa is an incredibly dangerous place. I mean in the strictest sense of the word, he is guilty of murdering another human being. Whether that was intentional or not is not something for me to decide. In these situations, I feel like there should have been some sort of a system so they could indicate to each other "hi honey, it's just me, don't shoot me dead in the foyer". It's sad.

A matter of semantics. He is guilty of homicide, the taking of another human life. Murder is willful and unjustifiable. Manslaughter is accidental or due to negligence. It is to be determined by the court whether he is a murderer or not.
BTW the Bible commandment is do not "murder" NOT do not "kill".
I agree that IF it were a mistaken identity situation he was guilty of negligence. Firearm ownership and usage requires a heightened level of responsibility, for everyone.
