Do you talk to yourself?

Contributor: surreptitious surreptitious
If so, how do you do it? I mean, I talk to myself, especially when I'm learning a language or writing something, to make sure that it makes sense. Most of my self-talk occurs inside my head, but those times it is generally out loud. I often run a sarcastic commentary in my head, even though there's no one to really benefit from it but me. I think that it helps to be able to roll my eyes internally and say something like "well THAT makes sense" to try and regain my composure when in frustrating situations.

I can't say that I've ever had a conversation with myself out of boredom, but perhaps some of you have? I'm not talking about creating and responding to multiple personalities or anything. Self-talk is socially regarded as a "wow, you're crazy if you do that" sort of thing, but psychologically speaking, it's perfectly healthy in moderation (as most things are). So don't let the mental image of the Looney Tunes using it as a sign that a character has finally snapped stop you from sharing.

I just asked myself if I talk to myself. I told myself "emphatically NO", but then we got into an argument and me and myself decided to agree to disagree on this. Right? (I am speaking to myself here...). Oh..the serious answer? No. I don't. Sorry.

You're sorry for mocking me? Well, it seems to me like you could have just not done so, but apology accepted. =)

I talk to myself all the time, I always have. It just comes out as part of the commentary running through my head. I know I'm doing it & I don't care, but I can easily stop if around others.

I do it the most when I'm bitching about something. I think many people don't consider some of the things they do to be talking to themselves. For instance, cursing a blue streak because you hurt yourself, is definitely talking to yourself. So is saying something like, "Damned phone, never stops ringing!", or "What now!?", when the doorbell rings.

Talking to pets is borderline, depends on the "conversation&quo t;: calling them to you, soothing them, praising them, to a degree, not included. But, other talking to them can cross over into talking to yourself. Of course, talking to a pet fish is always talking to yourself. I talk to the deer, the birds, the squirrels, cats & dogs. I suppose that's all because I talk to express myself, it's what I do. So, why not do it out loud since it comes naturally & I already do it in my head?

And I, too, definitely have a running commentary of sarcasm & other socially non-beneficial comments in my head! It's how I cope! Obviously, I don't care if I do sound looney tunes.

Same here. I don't talk to myself in general, but there are, "You've got to be kidding me!" moments when some works fly.

Not verbally, but only with in my mind! I ask myself mostly questions which I try to answer myself!! Does that make sense?

Definitely!! It is the only time I can be assured of an intelligent conversation--and getting the answer I want. I also talk to the critters, my old truck and my dirt bike has gotten used to being called a big green (&^%R when it does not do what it should have done--especially starting it the first time, then it is a *&^%$ *&%$ &$%^&^$#%^*(!!!!! I usually talk to myself in my head, but when no one else is around.....

I do when I'm extremely angry. But it's just little comments under my breath.

I often say my thoughts out loud while I am not in the company of other people, but I am not sure that counts as talking to yourself any more than having the same thoughts but not verbalizing them does.

If I'm trying to remember something I'll actually say it out loud three or four times to myself. I find that it helps me memorize things better than simply writing them down.

I tend to mumble to myself when I am doing one of my uni assignments and sometimes when I watch a movie.

Yes! More than I should but not it a crazy way. I'll think of a question, and only ask it partially aloud like "Do you think so/is that even safe/isn't that weird/you know what I mean?"
Then ill respond almost instantly like" yeahhh totally agree" or something weird like that.

I feel like it makes a ton of sense psychologically that expressing anger verbally works for so many people. The whole "let it out" philosophy is definitely getting some real-life backing here.

It's interesting, though, that it's not just a shout, it's often words, even when no one else is around to hear them. We know no one is there & I don't think it's just habit either, because I, & others, say different things when cussing, so there is an element of choice about it & that's why I include it in the talking to yourself category (holy run on sentence). I think most people will knee-jerk respond that they don't talk to themselves & I think more of them do it, at least occasionally, than they think. But I am no expert I do think people delude themselves a lot!

All the fucking time. When I am alone I talk to myself quietly. Only when I'm alone because I don't want to look fucking crazy lmao. I will sing sometimes if I'm doing stuff like cleaning or monologue to myself about stuff I am thinking about lmao. I feel like I do this more when I am upset like I am trying to talk myself through shit.

Consider it meditating out loud because basically the idea of meditation is to be alone and let go of what is in your head so I am kinda doing that idk.

I live alone I don't really see anything wrong with it unless I start angrily muttering in public someday or something. Feel free to commit me if that happens lmaooo. I feel like 'talking to yourself' is something people do but nobody talks about.

Also I talk to my cat sometimes like praising him and soothing him but he is literally deaf so unlike Wahine I kind of am talking to myself lmao.

Yeah, I do..mostly self criticism or lashing out at stupid drivers, ringing phones and stuff like that. Berating myself for making a mistake. Rehearsing a scenario of a future discussion/interview or confrontation.

Oh yes. Frequently.

When I go for a walk, I usually have my voice sound like an Aussie Lander on a wildlife/nature show and do the monologue of the locals I am around. I find it hard to keep a straight face when the locals are around the local food sources...

I actually do talk to myself. Many times when something is going on, I'll explain myself to me, and then what almost seems like my sub-conscious likes to poke holes in what I just said. Or it just likes to question my conscious brain. It is utterly confusing to explain it, but it's actually pretty neat.
