Do you take part in "class action lawsuits"?

Contributor: BlackOrchid BlackOrchid
Do you take part in any class action lawsuits that you are eligible to participate in? In general, do you think class action lawsuits are good for the consumers/people affected or in general do you feel most of these suits are frivilous?

Please share your experiences and opinions.

I was automatically included in one of those once. It was about a stock I've bought years ago, I didn't have to do anything and I received a few bucks in compensation.

Great question!

I just recently received credits from Barnes and Nobel as well as a check in the mail from the class action lawsuit against some of the publishers of ebooks conspiring to keep the prices the same. Several publishers of ebooks I bought from two different sites were found guilty and ordered to pay restitution in the millions. So who gets the money? Why those who filed of course. I was alerted by both the websites about the suit and I just followed the links and directions to register. I rarely thought about it again until I received my compensation which added up to about $20, total. I think class action suits are about the only way for individuals to go against big businesses. In general, there will always be frivolous civil court lawsuits, but that doesn't mean class actions suits, or any other suit, isn't valuable. I don't look around for suits to join in on, but if I knew about it and I can easily sign on, I would. The amount of 'work' I had to do to participate would definitely be determined by how much I stood to gain. I would not participate in something I didn't think was just.

It depends on what the suite is all about, but I definitely feel that in many cases a lawsuit is the only option left to have consumers voices heard. We the consumers deserve to be heard if we have been ignored for so long. Whats right is right!

I get dozens of these a year. Most are "automatic" and you don't have to do anything. At best, you get a coupon for a few pennies off the offending item. The only one I really signed up about had to do with a defect in an auto that we went round and round with in our own car. The settlement was like $60 million. 30 Million went to the lawyers, about 29 million went to the folks who filed the suit. The others, like me, who were the vast majority? Well, we got a "whopping" certificate for $100 off the purchase of another car from that same brand!!! We also got a "huge" settlement check, I believe it was $1.30 something. I laughed since they sent it certified mail with a return receipt, and the mailing cost more then the check I got! I never cashed it. It was such an insult and waste of my time in even tracking down and sending in the paperwork I had done.

I agree, when I have a problem with a company that I truly feel I was wronged by. Especially when you Google the company and see hundreds of similar complaints.

Right now, I am included in 2 class actions. One is the big "Ticketmaster" one that has been going on infinitely. The other one is against my employer for questionsble pay practices. The Ticketmaster one I was automatically included in and the one against my employer, I filled out a very brief one page questionairre to be included in.

No skin off my nose. I didn't go seeking any gain and honestly, cannot imagine ever suing anyone. In fact, the business I am in, we tend to enjoy staying as far away from lawyers as humanly possible.

There were a couple class actions I was automatically included in due to medicines prescribed many years ago during my cancer ordeal. I think the settlements were around $150 or so...

Right now I have 3 lawsuits pending--one against the State of MT, one against The county sheriff's office and another against the DCIS for their part in my husband's death. I do not want the money and will use it for helping others that have been in a similar situation to mine--I just want some justice for their negligence. It will not bring him back, but will help others in a bad nightmare...
