For small orders, I like self-checkout.
Do you prefer self-checkout or a human cashier at the store?

Self check out.

Hate the self check line.

And then they toss some heavy stuff on top of it! That's why I sort as I unload onto the belt, then I request what stays together - and F*ck 'em if they don't like it!

Same here. I like to bag my groceries the way I want it, it annoys the heck out of me watching the bagger person dump my nicely picked produce and breads roughly into the bags!
I usually shop late @ the 24hr grocery. They only have the self check out available at that time & I hate having a full cart & doing self check out because something always happens that I have to wait for a cashier to come fix. I really wish I could enter multiples of items like cat food cans; that's what makes me insane about self checkout & makes it sometimes go slower than a cashier would do it!
If a cashier is available I usually use them, but I do like self packing!

Like some others have mentioned, for me it depends. If I'm only getting a few items and the lines are really long - I just do self checkout. If I have a cart full of stuff, I'm going to the human cashier - even if I have to wait.

I like self checkout but mostly so I can watch the price on the screen and bag the way I like.

How about you? Do you prefer dealing with a human, or with a machine, when you're checking out? less

I generally go for the self-checkout, but it isn't always a pleasant experience. I hate chatty and loud robots.

I choose human! Self check outs eliminate jobs.
A few years ago the tellers at the bank I used encouraged me to use the ATM (I did not). At that time they had A manager, an assistant manager, 7 full time tellers and 4 part time tellers. Today the same bank has 1 manager, 2 full time tellers and 4 part time tellers.

I'm a cheapskate too kinda If I got 5cents off per reusable bag I brought I'd probably do actual cashier more often. As of now I only go to a real person to check me out if I had a ton of groceries!
03/17/2013
i dont really care, but the self checkouts tend to piss me off due to needing an ID or some malfunction
03/17/2013
I like self checkout, but I only use it when I'm getting a few things. I hate it when people go through with a giant cart full of groceries. And it's always the people who don't really know how to use the self check out so they take forever and they lines get backed up. I feel like the self checkout is supposed to be quick and convenient so if I'm in a hurry and just need one or two things I can run in and run out.
03/17/2013
Cashier always.
03/17/2013
I use the cashier, unless the lines are too long.

Self check whenever possibly since it usually a lot faster than waiting on a cashier.
03/18/2013
It depends, if I don't have much stuff I'll go for the self-checkout but most of the time I go for the human.
03/18/2013
Self checkout is nice for when I only get a few items.
03/18/2013
Depends on the store, crowd, staff on duty and how much I have to check out as well as the size of my purchases as well.

I agree! If there happens to be a problem, I would rather resolve the matter with a human cashier. Besides, an problem is usually resolved in your favor! It is like arguing with a computer, you never win!!!

Don't have many self check outs. Prefer human anyway, I carry to many coupons.

I hate people, cause people are stupid until you get to know them, so self checkout it is! I don't really hate people, but in my line of work as a cashier myself, you meet a lot of undesirables.

I prefer machines. Less social interaction. I used to be a cashier. Ugh.

I don't like replacing humans with machines. I like using machines to bring me closer to other people, not to separate me from them.

I prefer self-checkout when possible
03/18/2013
Depends on how many items I have.
03/18/2013
Between produce, coupons and such, using the self-check out takes longer because of all the times the cashier monitoring the self-checkouts have to come to assist me. It's not worth the hassle. I'd rather save time and go the the cashier.
03/18/2013
I prefer to do it myself. I'm not trying to be mean, but I used to work at a busy retail store and I was pretty quick. I was one of the top fastest cashiers at that store so I kinda get annoyed with how slow some of them are and would rather do it myself since I can't jump over the belt and take over. I trained a few before I left that drove me insane with how slow they rang stuff and how they bagged. Don't put crushables with heavy items, cleaning or bath items with food, and put more than 3 items in a dang bag, come on!
03/18/2013
It just depends. If I have under 10 things, I do self checkout.
