I think they were when I did live in a dry climate (Missouri as a child, Montana for a few years in adulthood) - it kept me from feeling dried out while breathing.
Although I live in a very humid place now, and dehumidifiers are much more expensive for some reason.

Yes, I do and they help me in the winter. They also help some airborne allergens sink down from the water in the air, which can help with allergies.

Humidifiers are mostly used in areas with cold winters where the forced air heat from natural gas furnaces makes the air extremely dry. My sister lives in such a place - and needs a humidifier to prevent asthma attacks.
Humidifiers can harbor a lot of bacteria - maintenance is important. My sister uses a UV (ultra violet) unit to kill bacteria in the HVAC system of her home.
Luckily we can open our windows here to allow for normal humidity.
There are also desert areas that use 'swamp coolers' which are rooftop evaporation coolers that are used in the summer. Evaporation of these units to prevent disease is also important.

Yes I do. I have really bad dry skin in the winter so it's crucial to be almost like the Amazon in here for me to comfortable. LOL

Yes, we have one. I tend to get lots of nosebleeds during the winter, so it really was a necessity.

I live in a generally humid place, but during the winter I run one at night. The cat loves it.

We got one as a baby shower gift before our son was born, but we've only used it a handful of times.
