Do you need noise to sleep? I always have to have a fan on when i sleep, or the tv or music, i do prefer the fan though. I used to need sound and light when i was younger and always kept the tv on the music channel.
Do you need noise to sleep?

Yes! I used to not sleep with ANY noise at all until several years ago. Now I need lots of noise to sleep. Heck, I can barely function without noise. I've had to quit running my air conditioner in my room because of it being cold now and I just finally gave up and turned it off for the first time this week! Lol. I was freezing my butt off just to keep the noise. For some stupid reason DirectTv will NOT fix their crappy recievers they upgraded us all to and mine has not had sound for months so it drives me insane. I keep music on in my bed room and in the living room. I like an air purifier too and the noise of it is nice.
I've also gotten used to Hubert, my hamster making a light noise when he runs in his wheel, but we bought him a ball to roam around loose in and now he refuses to run in his darn wheel! I just can't seem to get any noise around here. Lol.

I need the noise of a fan. I can't fall asleep if it's completely silent.

I need quiet!

Quiet for my wife and I - luckily we're on the same page with this one.

I need noise to fall asleep, otherwise I started thinking about things and kind of go in the opposite direction of relaxation. With outside noise, it helps to keep my thoughts quiet. Then once I am asleep, it doesn't really matter either way.

This, exactly. I start thinking of a billion things, but if the tv is on I dont. When I fall asleep if the tv goes off I am fine after that.

I can't fall asleep in complete silence. A fan going and a low radio is good for me but sometimes a movie going on the tv is enough.

I can not fall asleep in complete silence, because then I hear all the cracks and cats jumping and freak myself out.
TV on please.
TV on please.

Not necessarily, I can sleep with or without noise, but my husband needs absolute silence.
12/01/2011
I can't bear to have the television or radio on, and some noises, like a dripping tap or the dog panting, will keep me up. But a fan going is perfect.
12/01/2011
I almost always need some type of white noise to help me sleep; a fan or air conditioner are common things I use.

Noise seems to turn my brain off a bit. I usually put the TV on, 'sleep' in 60 minutes or so, and I'm gone within half that.

I need silence to sleep. if i hear noise then i'll be up all night

Sometimes silence is louder than noise.

I am SO bad with this. I can't have like a tv on because of the light, but I grew up listening to books on tape and now have to have something like that on.
Although I still sometimes revisit some of my old favorite books on tape (James Harriet things are wonderful), these days my sleep routine is dominated by podcasts. NPR shows and Howstuffworks, Dan Savage. I'll make a playlist with the new podcasts of the day and anything I missed from the day before and fall asleep to that. I get anxious in bed without it unless I take medication. Generally, I consider being reliant on noise better than being reliant on medication. So. Noise it is.

My husband and I have a few fans at the head of our bed that we run all night. When we travel we have to make sure to take a fan with us just in case!
12/01/2011
I always use a box fan. I take a travel fan with me when I go on a trip. I must have the white noise.

I need quiet to sleep! Hotels are the worst, if someone next door has their tv on I won't get a wink of sleep! I'm okay with traffic now, and trains can be soothing, but it took a little adjusting when I first went to college. And anything with voices---hopeless.

Silence, I tossed my clock one night when I was having trouble sleeping. Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, was very loud.

It depends, sometimes I need a little noise, other times noise drives me crazy.

I prefer silence
12/01/2011
When I lived in the dorms, I had to learn to sleep with noise. Now, I can't fall asleep in a totally quiet room - the silence is distracting.
12/01/2011
no, but i don't mind a fan.
12/01/2011
I need one of two conditions
1) Absolute silence
2) Constant/very simple pattern of noise
If it isn't dead quiet I will fixate on stray noises, the drip in the shower, the running toilet, the wind noise, the furnace cycling, others in the house, ect. So I end up running something for background noise.

Something like the water from our fish tank and a fan on low is enough sound for me, more than that is too much, but I need something so that little noises don't wake me up constantly!

I was just wondering, don't you have a CD or some kind of Stereo System so you can crank up the decibels, say to 50,000db???
