Do you let a stylist tell you how to wear your hair or pick for yourself?

Contributor: DustBunny DustBunny
I was discussing this with a friend, she'd suddenly changed her hair and I asked why. Her stylist insisted that it was the newest and most popular style. Since I work in a kitchen I don't style my hair, and even outside of work I can't say as I fuss over it. The hair looked okay on her, it was more a big changes from the long hair she had so it will take time to adjust to, but I thought it was so odd. I'm not sure a stylist could talk me out of my long hair, I love that I'm a redhead and wear my hair long with pride.

Would you let a stylist tell you what style is best for you? Would you consider a major change to suit a trend? Or do you know what you like and wear it how you want?

I dont really do major changes with my hair as it does not do anything anyways. It is flat and thin and does not hold a style. If it did I still would not let someone else choose my hairstyle.

Even when my hair was long I never let anyone tell me how to style it. I had one stylist go so far as to ignore me when I told her to just trim it. I figured she would just cut a 1/4" off or so, she cut off three inches! She did not work there much longer, not sure who scared her the most, me or the wife. lol To say we caused a scene is an understatement.

Since then the wife is the only one who cuts my hair. I sure miss my hair, I buzz it know, mostly because I don't like seeing the grey's and I refuse to dye it.

Not anymore. My ex-husband wanted me to have it long, so I grew it long - down to my ass - and he kept rolling on it in bed and it was too hot to have down. I asked stylists to cut it and make it neat - they cut it TOO short and insisted that "voluptuous women" need to have really short hair (I think to make us look even uglier). Then another gave me a bowl haircut - they never explained that scream of horror to the mall patrons.

Now I tell them to keep to the pageboy, although I am growing my bangs out at the moment. With fine stick-straight hair (which every skinny girl seems to want but I don't), styling just isn't a priority.

I would not let them talk me into anything. I would not let them make me look like everyone else with some lame trend. I am one who does not follow trends I like to wear what I want. Or have my hair the way I want it. I always pick out what I want them to do to my hair.

Depends. My stylist is also a friend I went to school with...we know each other from way back and I trust her. She knows the limits, keep the length and nothing too far out there.

I won't let a stylist talk me into following the latest trend. I know what kind of cut works best for me, and I'll make sure the stylist follows my request.

A couple of weeks ago I went to a stylist and told her that even though I didn't like his politics I did like his haircut, I wanted a Hitler Haircut. She didn't do a bad job, I like it.

I went to the same stylist for 3-4 years. Towards the end she was getting pretty pushy about cutting my long hair. I stopped going to her because I was tired of the pressure. Went to a new place for awhile until the new owner screwed up my eyebrows. Searching for a new place to go to that won't tell me to cut my hair. I plan to be pretty upfront about what I want. I'm still surprised people would say anything that might drive away their customers.

I can't say as I've ever had a stylist unless you count my mother. She cut my hair until I moved out and now I trim my bangs when I need it. Once a year I'll go to somewhere like great clips and have them trim the ends, but I've never founds a style I like more than what I've had for 15 years. My mothers coming to visit this summer and I asked if she'd cut my hair, she agreed!

No I'm very picky about my hair usually. I only let a stylist do what they wanted one time because I was really bored with it and they didn't do anything too out there, just added some nice layers that I really liked.

Not really. In the past I've let a stylist talk me into layers, which were okay but I wouldn't get again, and when I got my hair cut super short I let my stylist do whatever she wanted because I had no preference besides "super short". But if I ever went to a stylist again, which is unlikely at this point, I wouldn't let them talk me into the latest style. I like simple styles that I don't have to worry about.

I am a hair stylist. Usually I give some input during the client consultation, such as when someone requests a certain cut or color that may not work with their hair type but I always leave things up to the client. We need to reach a mutual agreement before I am willing to work on them. I want them to leave happy and to come back for their next appointment. There is the rare treat of having someone come in who gives you complete artistic freedom, I love those opportunities but they are few and far between.
