Do you know what you want to be "when you grow up"?

Contributor: SMichelle SMichelle
When you're young, everyone seems to ask you what you want to be when you grow up. I never had an answer for that question.

Now, as I am in my mid-twenties, I find that people tend to expect me to be doing exactly what I want to do "when I grow up". Still, I find myself saying that I have absolutely no idea what I want to be.

What about you? Do you know what you want to be?

I didn't have any idea, either. It took me until I was thirty-two to finally make up my mind ... some people are rather disappointed that I'm okay with office administration ... they're telling me I should be a published novelist instead. I need to build up more confidence for that.

I voted other. I work with kids and am working on my degree in education so I can be a teacher. I love what I do, but ultimately I would love to be a baker and have my own little adorable bakery.

I am 26 and have kids so I'm sticking with the "safer" route of education. Who knows, though.

My main profession didn't even exist when I was little kid. I'm a nurse/lactation consultant and a post partum doula. Obviously nurses were around when I was a kid, and women had other women help them after their babies were born. But, the first Board Certified Lactation Consultant wasn't certified until around 1985.

I'm doing what I love, but business is slow at the moment.

I only really figured it out after I graduated university. And it was completely unrelated to my bachelors degree.

I want to be a photographer, or an accountant type person/bookkeeper. Two totally different worlds, but I'm still not sure if that's what I want to do and I'm 28! It wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for my 2 kids. I feel like I need to have a house by now, and a CAREER, not just a job. Sucks

I always thought I had to have a "real" job that I was going to school for but right now I work in retail management and I love it and that's what I plan to make a career doing.

Other, because I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up and some days I am okay with it, others not so much.

LOL. Everything! I'm graduating from my writing course this month and going on to try Hypnotherapy and possibly Accupressure after that and if I like it, who knows!? I want to do it all, I guess. I have so many goals and so much passion. I didn't know that I wanted to be any of this until I was in my late teens.

I know what I want to do after I graduate college, however whether or not I can actually do it is another thing entirely. Not very many people in my shoes are getting a job doing what they'd like to. If that is the case with me, I'd probably just stick with my current job and try for promotions.
