Out at a restaurant I had a door dropped on me by a pre-teen kid. I always hold doors open, for family/friends and for strangers because my mom taught me it was polite. (I'm female in my late 20s) Am I strange? What about you?
Do you hold open doors?

I hold open doors whenever I can and actually dislike it when males in my presence insist that they get all of the doors. I think that whoever makes it to the door first or is closer to the door handle or who is carrying fewer things (et cetera) should be the one who opens it. One of the most frustrating months of my life was two years ago when I broke my leg and wound up having every single door held open for me regardless of whether it was convenient for people to do so.

I hold doors open for everyone, it's politeness and a habit of mine. A lot of teenagers, and even some adults, do not have the common courtesy to do so. What annoys me the most is when you hold the door open for some strangers, they pass straight through, won't attempt to keep the door open themselves, and won't even mutter a thank you!
03/24/2013
I have always done that. Especially for the elderly.
03/24/2013
I'm male and will hold open the door for the elderly, family, and friends.

I hold doors open for everyone except my guy who wants to open doors for me, even the car door - he's so sweet.

Yep, always.

I hold open doors if I see someone coming out while I am, behind me or something. I never just let a door fall on someone. If there's someone about to go through the door at the same time as me & I don't want to be in the position to hold it, I'll stay behind, let them go and then I'll go. No need to be rude and just let the door fall on someone.

I don't expect people to go out of their way to open doors for me though, but I think if you're going through at the same time, and you grabbed the door first, it's just natural, common courtesy to at least shove it open hard so the other person can get through too. Jumping to hold the door for someone isn't expected, but there's a difference in not having manners, and like your situation, it sounds like the person had a lack of those!
I've had someone accidentally let a door slam on me, but it was because they had their hands full, and in that case, I totally understand.
I have always been taught it was polite too. You aren't strange.
I was happy to see the votes on this. Most people voted that they hold doors for their loved ones/family and strangers too, but nobody voted that they only hold doors open for women only. That was nice to see. Not saying women shouldn't have doors opened for us, but I like that people are fair enough to open for all people, not women only.

I always hold the door open if I'm with someone and I get to the door ahead of them or for a stranger if they are right behind me as I get to the door.
03/24/2013
I try to as common courtesy. I hate when I get stuck holding it for a ton of people though. I've also been yelled at my elderly women who say "I can take care of myself". I guess they think it's an age thing but I do it for any age.
03/24/2013
I hold doors open for anyone. I also help strangers out that look to be in need.
03/24/2013
yes, I am as helpful as I can be.
03/24/2013
I always try to hold doors open for people.
03/24/2013
I always hold the door open and wait for people to catch up.
03/24/2013
I was taught to always be courteous and hold doors for people, especially elders and women. Part of growing up in TX and being raised right.
03/24/2013
I will hold the door for anyone close behind me. If I see someone elderly I will hold it longer.
03/24/2013
I like you were raised to hold doors open for others. Like Gunsmoke if they are close behind me then I will hold it no problem and for the elderly I will wait a tad bit longer for them to get to the door. I also get up at other places when someone who is in a wheelchair or something can't open the door for themselves, an open it for them.

I'm a female, and I hold doors open for everyone, regardless of gender.
03/25/2013
I am male and I always hold doors for people regardless of age or gender. I have found that holding a door for a woman really scores points in a relationship. And as funny as it sounds... believe it or not.... getting a woman ready to be kissed then instead of doing it... asking permission.
03/25/2013
I hold doors for everyone, but the ones who don't say thank you get a swift rebuke because I've had it with rude, entitled behavior!

Yes, I hold doors for all people regardless of who they are. It's the polite thing to do and my actions have now rubbed of on my boys and I'm quite proud.

I hold the door open for the elderly and for people who have a lot in their hands.

I'm the same way. I'm usually the first to a door leaving somewhere and will hold it open for as many people as i can before i have to leave and do my best to wait for those who are slower, visibly impaired (holding a bunch of stuff/physical injury/ ect) to pass through. If i notice someone is fumbling i will ask if they need me to hold the door for them too.

I'd rather not someone insist they have to hold the door open for me, like some men i know will do, since i am totally capable and usually at the door before they are.

I hold them for everyone
03/25/2013
I do it too. It's just a nice, polite thing to do for anyone who looks like they might need it.

I hold doors open for strangers

I hold doors open for everyone, and I go out of my way more (standing and holding it all the way open) if it is an elderly person, a person in a wheelchair or a person with a stroller.
03/25/2013
I always hold the door open, even for people who are that awkward distance behind you when you wonder whether you should or not, and sometimes they have to quicken their pace so you're not standing there for too long.
