Do you have a pen-pal?

Contributor: K101 K101
I never really had a long-term pen-pal as a teenager, but other kids did. I remember one of my girlfriends would send stuff back and forth to people in other countries. I've communicated with my online-only customers and have had them send me cards, drawings, and letters in between orders, but never an actual pen-pal... until recently!

So I'm really curious to hear if ya'll have pen-pals? Is pen-palling out of date? Did you have a pen-pal back in the day? Care to share?

I always thought it would be neat to have a pen-pal who shared similar interests as me. Someone who I could learn about, learn how they live and show them how I live, here in America.

My pen-pal isn't exactly... in another country, but is in prison. Remember my poll asking something about prisoners being allowed to write people? I had asked something like 'do you think prisoners should not be allowed to send/recieve letters?' That was because WriteAPrisoner.com was getting some heat over allowing prisoners access to the outer world. I've read that in many states, they want to disable prisoners from this "privilege."

Anyways, my point isn't about what prisoners should and should not be allowed (not this time anyways). I just want to know what types of pen-pals ya'll have had and if you would ever pen-pal with a prisoner? Would it depend on the crime? Is it a no-go all together? Only family? Please share!

The thought of it scares me a little. I'm a paranoid person.

The only reason I'd have a prisoner as a pen-pal is if I knew that person prior to their arrest.

I know, I've probably seen one too many horror flicks, but that's just me.

I haven't had a penpal that was in prison, but I have been locked up(for something not so serious and I was not in prison or jail) but out of boredom and loneliness i loved the people who i wrote that would write back.

I would love to have a penpal in prison, they are the people who could really USE a nice friendly voice, on paper.

I went on vacation to Hilton Head when I was 9. I became pen pals with one of the girls also there on vacation.

I also had a pen pal who was a friend of my mother's but had moved to England.

I would love a new pen pal, but I haven't had the opportunity.

When I was in elementary school and middle school, we were assigned pen pals every few years. We would write back and forth and get to know each other. It was really interesting and sometimes the people were really far away and you got to learn a whole lot.

I still talk to one of my penpals occasionally. She moved from Arizona to Minnesota a few years back and we met up. It was neat.

I've had several pen-pals and I still have one. We've been writing each other since age 13 or 14 and it's been really interesting to see how we both changed and still have so much in common, maybe even more than we did before! (Hard to explain, lol.)

In 9th grade we were actually required to have one for a foreign language class.

I wrote to a prisoner once who was in for non-violent civil disobedience. I only wrote to him once or twice because he had a ton of letter-writers because of the nature of his "crime" and could barely keep up with them all.

I did in the past but, not anymore. I mainly wrote to pen-pals before the internet.

Yes I did have one. But I think we only exchanged letters twice. I'm not sure if I would want one or not know. I guess it would be over the internet now
