Do You have a Credit Card?

Contributor: Rockin' Rockin'
I have credit cards but only really use one of them. I have debit cards, too, but I only use them to get cash from ATMs. I try to use credit cards whenever I can because the rewards are good. And I use them like debit cards, meaning I only buy what I can afford that month. I usually pay cash for things $5 and under just because I think there are charges for the business when they accept a credit card, so if it's a small total I don't want to make them pay the fee.

I think we are moving toward paying with credit cards (or debit cards) everywhere, which is strange. I'm always surprised to hear "Oh, we don't accept cash." Cash is guaranteed money; it seems very odd not to accept it.

I just got my first credit card a couple weeks ago. It's pretty nice having one I've found out.

I have just one credit card and I use it only in emergencies! Otherwise my debit card is just fine.

I have a debit card and two credit cards. One of the credit cards is to my dad's account though and is for emergencies so I don't think I've ever actually used it but he feels better knowing I have it. I mostly use my debit card, but do use cash when it's a small amount

I can't afford a credit card. I barely make ends meet; my financial situation is too precarious to go adding on debt that I KNOW I will struggle to pay off. So I just do without.

I had several credit cards. Now all I have is credit card debt.

I have both, but we only use the credit card for emergencies. We have 4 kids so I think that it is neccesary if we have a medical or other emergency. Other than that we use cash or debit or checks.

Same here. But I pay it off in full every month so no interest charges!

Carrying cash just isn't sensible. Cards are faster, more convenient, make tracking spending easier, and if my wallet is ever stolen, can be cancelled. Unless I am going out and know I'll need some cash, I usually only use my card.

I have a debit card but no credit card although Anakin is the one who carries on so technically we do have credit cards if you count us as a couple. I got into credit card problems so I prefer not to have one.

We have a mass of credit cards. Probably too many. But, imo, life cannot be run as an adult without them. Emergencies happen, as do children's expenses, home repairs, car repairs, large purchases, I even use our credit cards to keep track of medical expenses as my health requires a number of prescriptions to be bought. Not to mention any kind of travel or having to rent a car when yours is in the shop.

I don't know how people can manage without a credit card. You can't buy anything online, make airline reservations, you can't make large purchases, unless you go to the bank and get a cashier's check or carry large amounts of cash (I mean really, outside of my MIL, WHO really uses checks anymore?) you can't rent a car or even make reservations on most hotels and so many other things.

Kayla, what is their reason for not having a credit card? Are they one of those "We have NO debt and are damn proud of it!" people? Ug. My In-laws are like this ,as is my mother and it drives me crazy. I want to just tell them, "Shit, pull yourself into the 1970s already, will you?"

My MIL's parents never even had a checking account. They would go to the bank ever time they had to pay a bill, any bill, and PAY for a cashier's check. They were the kind of people who "don't trust nobody with our money." Sheesh. Penny wise and pound foolish.

Now that I am thinking about it, I answered wrong. i used to have a debit card and do not anymore. Our bank has debit onthe card but only to take money out the ATM I suppose. It is always as credit which makes it annoying to get gas at a cash or debit only place

I have both debit and credit. It was a necessity to have a credit card at one time and I payed for the fact that I lived pay check to paycheck, but still did whatever I wanted. I've gotten my debt in order and use my credit card responsibly now. I think that is most important if you are going to have one.

I wish, I'd love to get one just so I can build up my credit. I can't seem to get approved for one, anything I've wanted I've save for an bought with my debit card.

At this point, I don't see much point in spending money that I don't have. Later on, I'd like to get a credit card to get some airline miles, but right now I'm just sticking with my debit card.

Of course, it is responsible to pay off your credit card balance every month. However, NOT carrying any balance on a credit card and not having credit cards can actually harm your credit score. Likewise, too high of balances and missing payments on your cards will as well.

But, people don't seem to realize that not having a credit card or several of them is actually detrimental to your credit. I don't like it, and I don't make the rules. You know who does? The banks; the very people who issue credit cards make the rules of what determines "good credit" and what doesn't. (Stop me before I go on an other anti-Big Business/anti-bank Power to the Worker rant. Please. )

I actually had my first AmEx card pulled by the company. Did I miss payments? No. Did I carry a high balance? No. I used the card sparingly, and paid it off in full every month. I went to use it one day and it was declined (not too embarrassing.) I called AmEx and was told that my card was cancelled due to "under use" and not carrying "enough of a balance to make it worth our while to allow you to be a customer." Assholes.

I have an other one now, that I NEVER use, issued through a different bank (the first one was directly from AmEx, one of their "Blue" cards) and so far so good. I'm not carrying a balance on it, and don't intend to use it unless there is an emergency.

I have both but rarely use the debit card or ATM. I charge everything but pay the bill in full each month to avoid interest and problems. I have about $5.00 in my purse, since it costs $40.00 to fill my tank, I would never have enough cash.

I have a debit card and the only "credit cards" I have are 2 store cards. Never could get a "real credit" card do to financial reasons without having to pay a lot of fees ex getting 300 in credit but between all the fees my real credit was like 50-not gonna happen

I do most of my shopping on-line, so I couldn't get by without having a debit card, at the least.

I have a good number of credit cards, most with no balance right now. I have a decent credit score by using them and paying them off.

I'm thankful I have done that - I can get my own phone, get a loan, things like that. If you don't develop a credit history early, you can end up in deep trouble if you're on your own with no cosigner.

Almost impossible to live without one (try renting a car without one...impossible), however we use our DEBIT card for almost everything. Convenience of credit, with NO debt or interest to pay.
