This may be a hard one for a lot of us, but when I began this... most strange journey I've been on due to a school project thing, I came across a really big question. Even I have a hard time saying for sure what the "right" answer should be.
I mean some of these inmates whom I've came across are in jail for gruesome crimes and horrifying murders. Then there are those that are in for mail fraud. What really made this so tough was when I came across one inmate on death row. He talked about his time in prison and then about how terribly lonely he was. He said "I haven't had a single visitor in over 9 years and nobody has sent me mail. I'm lonely bad and I need love." It really made me so sad! Sure this guy done something unimaginable, but the sympathetic person in me is there even in this case!
I asked several people throughout my day today how they felt. Most said no, that they do not think murderers should be allowed mail call. After hearing the stories of these men (especially those on death row) I have a hard time saying they shouldn't be allowed mail. I'm a big weenie though! Ha Ha. However, I do think mail from the outside world is something inmates need and I don't see much wrong with allowing them that.
I don't know a whole lot about prison, but I remember my cousin's husband who became family to us had spent time in prison on and off and we all would write to him. At another time in my life I sent mail regularly to another close family friend who was in boot camp for a couple of years as a teenager.
Honestly, I don't think it's my decision to make and it is a hard question to answer. I know exactly how it feels to have lost a family member to a murderer and I know how it feels to want that person to pay for what they did, but I also think communication with people is something everyone needs. Maybe under certain circumstances such as good behavior?
I guess I really can't say 100% what I think should or should not be allowed.
While a lot of prisons do allow mail to inmates, some do not allow it to those on death row. So, do you believe that ALL inmates should be allowed "mail call"
