Both my husband and I baby talk to our poodle on occasions, but we can also be stern with him when necessary.

Only when no one else is around. My cats seem to like it, though, and think I am upset with them if I don't do it.

Definitely. It's difficult not to.

I saw this documentary that showed how domesticated dogs came to be. It was fascinating. With each generation of docility they become "cuter" features wise and more able to read what pleases humans. They evolved in a way to make us want to take care of them.
