I have a hard time believing or listening to anyone who refers to people as sheep. Sheep are incredibly stupid creatures, and though I know a few morons here and there, I don't know anyone that has intelligence that equates to sheep. I get it's a metaphor, but it's an absolutely insulting one to refer to the rest of your fellow man.
And what happened thousands of years ago? You need to be specific; we had the Egyptians, the Romans, Greeks, old Native American tribes, etc., etc. What did they do that we're repeating? They were producing great ideas and art that is still worshiped and revered in our time, so if we're mimicking that, that's great news to me lol
The issues that I think are most pressing for the time being are health care, international relations, our failing social programs, and the state of our economy. If you know anything that's anymore pressing, than damn, I can't believe that I missed it.
Just my two cents.

Yeah, I must say that human creature is an amazing creature, and our good intentions and heartfelt feelings have made things what one can only admire and be touched by...
Though also, art and power very often buddy up...
Like the mentioned Egyptian art, or baroque...
Art was to express how "magnificent" the folks were who ordered them...
In the baroque era for example, when the governments finally achieved unbelievable powers, they wanted to show off "how cool they are"... The wonderfully "overdecorated" buildings, the grandiose music ordered by the wealthy, masterpieces created by genius people for those who gladly supported the art, reveling in money...
Also, while people are such most lovable creatures, they also tend to be greedy and not care about others when it comes to grabbing what they can for their own personal advantages...
"Sheeple" isn't said because one hates the masses, it is rather because it is ridiculous how some, few careless folks "rape" the always honored concepts of honesty, good will...
Seeing it through those mirrors it would be hard to say "I am not a sheep", because one already knows that things happen over our heads what we cannot influence, and there is mostly only a pretended "democracy", which is a wonderful idea but reminds me of the beauty of the original philosophy of "communism", that everybody is equal, and nobody deserves less than the other, as we all have good qualities, one just has to find what it is...
Where it failed in a major way to create it well and smoothly was that people who were smart enough to obtain power didn't care a bit to make real communism, it was fed to the people that "yay, we are the good guys, and we are gonna make your life better!"
French revolution totally the same, excellent example of how a wonderful and justified idea can turn into sheer terror... (Jacobin tyranny if you forgot the details...)
Democracy can be described in three ways, and all three come from the times when it was still very fresh in Greece and the Roman areas:
1. the uneducated dumb masses vote for what sounds the best
2. an oligarchy (wealthy layer or society) rules the state
3. pretend-democracy, called a democracy and has elements of it to keep the common people quiet, entertained by the "panem et circenses" (bread and circus), cause as long as you aren't starving and can enjoy your time you won't care about anything else - while behind the scenes everything else is decided without your real agreement
The word sheeple is not to underestimate people, it is rather to tell them "hey, are we sheep, of course we aren't, we are powerful and smart beings, let's not let a tiny elite decide what is best for us, we can figure it out as good or better!"
As long as people are fine with living in the ignorant bliss of working their ass off while a big chunk of their money goes to folks who gamble with it cause that's what they enjoy, and while it is enough for many to sit at the TV and revel in the news about celebrities making no sense, not interested in anything more, I could hardly say they are smarter than sheep...
They are capable of it, we, humans are marvelous beings, and it's up to us only how we make an environment where we can live freely, and find happiness without becoming slaves to the power for little pleasures fed bit by bit to us through the media, instead of shutting the friggin screen off and starting a good conversation about something what enlightens the mind...
No offense and judgment here, I am not a "knowledge worm" too, but I think that one should stop saying "I am fine with mah telly", and tell instead "I want something what is greater and deeper than the shallow life I have to be content with everyday"...
It doesn't mean that you wanna make a bloody revolution and always be angry and dissatisfied, it rather means that you strive to be better and better all the time, and that you want to feel AND know that you walk with open eyes, and you own your freedom, and you don't sell it away like some poor peasant in the feudalistic world for "protection"... Like gangs bullying you for "protection money"... Mehhh... :/
