deceived?

Contributor: DeliciousDrip DeliciousDrip
i noticed that a lot of people on here don't have a "REAL" avatar/ Picture of themselves. I get the whole privacy thing BUT it gets annoying when i see the same avatar over and over again! =( .. im just saying!

what do you think ?

It doesn't really bother me when I see people with the same pictures.
I use to have my picture up, but now have my puupy instead cause he is better looking than me...

I look at it this way, some people are more private than others. For whatever reason they want to participate on this forum in voice only. There is nothing wrong with that. That's why there is an option to upload your own avatar or use a preselected one. There is nothing deceptive going on, just people who would rather be heard and not seen. My avatar is a picture of me, but I'm pretty open about what I write about so I don't mind my name and face being out there.

When I am on the forums, I don't really care what a users picture is of. What matters to me is the content of their post... You can't really get a sense of who a person is by their avatar.. but you can by the words they choose and the posts they make that is just my opinion anyways.

Oh and I didn't notice the option about "fake avatar" but I don't think a person with an avatar other than their face should be considered "fake". Like Shellz had mentioned, her avatar is her dog. Her dog clearly means a lot to her. I think avatars can represent a part of you, or something meaningful to you rather than just a head shot

*shrugs* I don't mind the same userpics popping up in my feed. So long as I'm not being forced to stare at someone's random cock-shots, who cares what their avatar is?

Also, I don't see how it's being deceptive to use a picture that is not of you on an online forum. Some people don't feel comfortable/safe putting their face as their userpic on a 'adult' forum.

Not all of us want anyone to see who we are. I do not want my someone at my job or something to know I am on here. I do not care what others avatars are as long as it is not a cock, boob, or butt shot. That annoys me, who cares what that looks like.

I never really post my face online except on my personal blog and facebook. It's just how I am. I don't think it's very fair to judge someone based off their avatar either and I agree with sktb0007. Besides, I always try to pick a witty and/or amusing avatar at the very least.

I tend to recognize people by their avatars instead of their usernames, but it doesn't really bug me when I see some people who have a generic/common avatar.

My avatar is not me because I don't want to display a real picture of myself on here. Maybe sometime further down the road. I also notice that the people who have similar avatars tend to be newer members. I know when I first started here I used one of the given avatars. In my opinion it shouldn't matter what the avatar is. I spend a lot more time reading reviews, writing reviews, and posting in the forum than I do looking at avatars.

The only times this makes me stumble is when an established member has a generic avatar, and then a new poster is using the same avatar. More than once I've blinked and said "Wow, that doesn't sound like something txymxy would say!" or "That's not like sarki at all!" ... only to realize that it's not, it's just somebody with the same avatar.

PS: And my avatar's not me because I bike way too fast for anyone to take my picture

I've had to do a double take more than a few times too.

It doesn't reeeeally bother me, because a lot of people choose their own unique avatar (weather it be of their face or not) anyway. I completely understand and respect everyone's reasons for not showing their face even if I choose to show mine.

It doesn't bother me at all. I agree with Pixel, I don't care what avatars people use, as long as I don't have to look at anything too weird or disgusting. But, honestly, sometimes I'm even in the mood to look at weird or disgusting stuff, so even that doesn't really bother me.

I agree, it can be irritating to see the same avatar repeatedly but I do understand that some users choose not to share their personal photos on sites like this for reasons, such as work and not wanting to be recognized outside of the community, which goes the same with what personal information they may share. Personally, I am a very open woman, and share my real photos, basic information, etc., on websites such as this, but some people on this site have things at stake. Look at the teachers losing their jobs for "inappropriate" facebook photos. What if a student happens across this site, God-forbid an underage teenager lies about their age and happens across their teacher's profile, that individual COULD be terminated from employment, as unfortunate as it may be. I often risk my job with what I post publicly, on sites like this and even on facebook, but I figure what the hell, you like me or you don't.

It seems like with most message boards/forums, using a photo of yourself isn't all that common. Most people just pick an icon they like.

When I go through the forums, the unique ones catch my eye and I pay attention to those posters more. You don't have to post a picture of yourself, but you will stand out if you have something different than everyone else.

Personally, I like the people who have a picture of themselves. It's nice to get an idea of that person when you're reading their reviews and forum posts.

I find it a bit irritating. I like to check out reviews and forum posts from people I am following and this makes it pretty difficult to do when I am randomly browsing the site. I used a pic of myself, but not my face. Just take any pic of anything and use it.

I used a 'canned' avatar for too long. I recently upgraded to a unique stylized avatar - I'm just not in a position to use a real pic.

There are default avatars provided, and I understand why a lot of people would just click one. I did to start with.

Also, I've always viewed avatars as more of an expression of self rather than a slot where one is expected to insert a personal photograph.

Speak for yourself. I wouldn't mind if it was a boob or butt shot .

I don't have a picture of myself for two reasons; first, the privacy. I come online to get away from my real life. Second, because I don't like taking photos of myself. I don't like posed shots, preferring candid ones.

As to the point of repetitive avatars: it annoys me to a small extent. I'll be reading something and, after a quick look at the avatar, assume it's someone I recognise. And then make me wonder why things don't add up. Why they're writing in a different fashion. And then I'll look at the name, and wonder why I didn't do that in the first place.

Meh. I started off with the generic one I have, and just never changed it. Although, even though it's a generic avatar, it's one of the less used ones. I'm weird about privacy on the Internet, rarely even using my full name. However, I do like the idea of using a picture of my dog as my avatar. I may have to steal that idea.

Depending on your career path in life you have to be private about some things. It's sad but it's the reason that I have chosen to keep my avatar as an art piece by Brian Froud instead of a photo of me.

it doesn't bother me. i personally don't want to upload a picture of myself until i know what job field i'm going into. if it's conservative, then it's just not going to happen.
