Cunning Linguists? (Languages!)

Contributor: Valyn Valyn
So.. I'm wondering about languages and sex, and want your opinions. We've all heard that some languages are supposedly sexier than others, and I've had debates about it with friends, too. Do you agree?

First, what languages do you speak? Do you think they're sexy?

Do you think any particular language(s) is(/are) sexier than others?

Do foreign accents turn you on? (Pepe LePew, anyone?)

Have you ever had issues with foreign languages? Any ease with a language barrier? (On a trip to Europe I know lots of girls that were with us had No problem slipping away with Italian/French guys)

Let's hear the stories!!

I only speak English, and I suppose it *can* be sexy depending on the tone and what's being said. But I had an Italian lover for awhile and he'd whisper things in Italian when we had sex. I didn't have much of an idea of what he was saying, but it didn't matter--- it sounded sexy!
I don't think I've ever felt that any language is absolutely sexier than the other, nor are accents. It's more the tone/voice thing for me. Some people just have the kind of voice that makes you want to hump them through the floor.

I speak English and French. I think that French happens to be very lovely, though I am more fluent in English. Accents don't turn me on, actually. I want to learn German because it's the perfect language for dominance.

I've never had an issue with any languages because I'm very good with learning new ones. Aside from that, no one has ever spoken to me in any language other than English during sex. I've spoken to partners in French, though, and they swooned over it.

Interesting I was curious because I speak four languages, and sometimes people love it and want me to speak in something they haven't heard much, and other people just.. kinda.. don't care.

I'm British, speak fluent French and bad German. I've never really thought of language being 'sexy' before, although I guess German's pretty blunt.

I used to be fluent in German...now only passable. I can get pieces of French, Spanish, and Portuguese. My gf was raised in a Cantonese speaking home and learned English and Mandarin growing up, she won't use either in the bedroom (Cantonese or Mandarin). She says it'd be a turn off for her. I can see that. Nothing like conjugating verbs while other things are going on!

I think the hottest accent is Welsh or Irish...Australian accents are pretty hot too.

I'm a native speaker of English, speak fluent Spanish, passable Catalan (getting better) and rather bad French.

My boyfriend is a native speaker of both Catalan (his first language) and Spanish, and he speaks English well, French about like me, a bit of Italian and a bit of Greek. He also took Latin, but what use is that?

Oh, and my partner and I usually speak Spanish during sex. I'm not sure why, but English is rarely used in bed even though we speak English about 60% of the time at home.

One more thing and I'll shut up - I just looked at the title of this and found it funny because my partner actually has his Ph.D. in linguistics.

I currently only speak English and French, and French is very attractive.

It's spoken on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, on the Balearic Islands, a little bit in southern France (French Catalonia), in Andorra and also in one city on the island of Sardinia. It has about 8 million speakers.

My partner speaks the occidental dialect, which is a bit different from the one spoken in northern cities like Barcelona. If you're interested the wikipedia page actually has a lot of good information: link

English is my native language, but I also speak German at native-level fluency, as well as passable Mandarin and bad Japanese.

I long ago realized that sharing a second language with someone doesn't mean a whole lot... there are plenty of English-speakers I don't care for, so why should the chances of compatibility be higher with German-speakers? That being said, I did build my German fluency up from nothing over many years, and I do feel a certain kinship with other non-native speakers of German.

English is the sexiest language to me simply because I possess the sex register in that language. What I mean is, I've never had a German-speaking boyfriend or girlfriend before, so I don't have and have never experienced the German words one uses in the world of sex and relationships in general. Sure, I've seen some German-language porn, but that's not the same thing.

French, Russian, English, a little Mandarin. Russian is Sexy, Ukraniaan is sexy. There are a couple languages from Southeast Asia that sound like chickens pecking. Not sexy. Most people I hear speaking Spanish speak to fast to sound sexy. Latin is not sexy.

I speak mostly English, but know enough French and Spanish to usually understand bits and pieces of what someone is saying.

I love French, but I am not partial to any particular accent. I like Scottish, Irish and Australian but it always depends on who is doing the talking. I would do very, very bad things to Gerard Butler.

I speak English and Mandarin Chinese fluently. I took a few German classes in high school and college, so I have what I call a "working knowledge" of German. I've picked up a bit of Cantonese and Japanese as well.

I think Tolkien's brand of Elvish is the sexiest language out there. Nerdy, right? I really love lyrical, "cute"-sounding languages. When it comes to accents, though, I love Indian because of they way they pitch their syllables and Eastern European as well.

My only issues with foreign languages is when someone asks me a complex question in one of my "other" languages and I can see the answer in my head in English, but I can't figure out how to say it in that language. It's so frustrating!

Actually, we don't conjugate verbs in Mandarin OR Cantonese. It's just simpler that way!

I speak English and Spanish, and know a little weensy bit of French, Italian, and Cherokee.

I really, really, REALLY, like British accents. And people speaking in French. I think my favorite is a British person speaking in French. Even though I'm fluent in Spanish I don't really find it sexy.

Misha, I agree with you Russian is sexy. Dariusz, our talented ceramist at Duncan Charles speaks both Polish and Russian everytime I hear him speaking Polish, not much of a turn on, now Russian totally different story, I may not know what he is saying but in love any way!

I speak English, French and Spanish, plus a smattering of German and I took Russian at school, so I still have vague memories of repeating phrases like 'oo menya yest karandash' (I have a pencil). The really useful stuff.

I have perfected the phrase "I learned German at school, but it was so long ago that I have forgotten virtually all of it", in a good German accent, which comes fairly easily for people from the north of England, like me. It really impresses German speakers till they ask me something else and I smile vacantly and say it again. Following it up with my other German sentence, remembered verbatim from school: 'Peter steckt das Baby in dem Kleiderschrank', is the coup de grace, so to speak.

Sexiest accent, I think, is French. It's a language in which many of the sounds are formed right at the tips o' the lips, so if you're lucky enough to get close enough to a native French speaker it can be quite hypnotising.

Spanish, at least European Spanish, sounds like typewriters. Doesn't generally do it for me, but hey, context is everything. I had a Welsh girlfriend back in college who used to call me a cripple ('oh, you crri - pel!' was a standard Cardiff term of endearment at the time!). In the right tone and circumstance, it was one of the oddest turnons I've ever experienced.

My native language is English, but I speak German and French coherently. While studying in Berlin last spring I dated a guy who would talk dirty in English with a German accent, sometimes he was spot on but one time I think he seriously botched a translation. While I was giving him a blow job he said "Oh you like dat ja? You like to feel my sperm go down your troat?"

Most Germans I met quite fancied my "American" accent. I appreciated the compliment, but it was strange to think of myself as having an accent.

Otherwise, I now find the German language (and often accents) quite sexy as well!

The French language, the accents and the men are also quite lovely. However, I often find French guys to be pretentious. While in Berlin I also met a French-speaking Tunisian man who was gorgeous, but married. Curses.

I've started learning Arabic, but I'm still working on the alphabet and basic vocabulary so I can't discuss it all that well.

Finally, I've always been a sucker for Russian and Eastern European accents. A guy I'm seeing right now speaks fluent Russian, and I looooove hearing it...
