Do you pets just eat store bought food, and perhaps some "table scraps" or do you actually cook/prepare food for them. In other words, do you, if you are making hamburgers, make some for your dog or cat? Do you hand cut fruit for your bird?..etc?
Do you cook or prepare meals for your pets?

I give my kitty food from the pet store. It's a really good organic kind which is good for her.

I am not opposed to making treats (I actually have a recipe somewhere...) but to make actual meals for our dog in addition to making for our family would be too much.

They eat dry pet food regularly, and they occasionally get scrambled eggs and apples as a treat.

Cat E.
I used to have a cat and would occasionally make her a chicken breast. I'd cut it up real good.

I don't have pets but if I did, they would get what I could afford. I'm not into the whole give your animal gourmet food thing.
And since we're on the topic...
Dear Manufacturers of Pet Food:
Stop making pet food look like people food. That's just totally uncalled for, thanks!

Aw! So sweet of you. I would share my grapes with my cat. Hubby is an advocate of "bacon grease as gravy for dry food".

I miss having a cat. Boy, I'd love it if my gravy was bacon.

Hubby feels pretty strongly about making sure our dogs don't get people food. It upsets their tummies, and having a clean system makes it a much easier ordeal if they get into something bad for them, like chocolate. But they get so cute when I take eggs out of the refrigerator. They are such mind readers. It takes all of 5 seconds for them to figure out if they are getting a treat, or if I'm just using eggs to cook.
I'm a shameless freak for my dogs.

no, I don't really put that much effort into it.

This is new, I never heard of preparing food for pets. We feed our cat store bought hard & canned food for the nutrition he needs. Have for all our pets and don't believe in giving human food to the cat. I once lived in a national park and saw what happened to animals, especially the wild ones who were give food, not a pretty sight.

Nope I have a snake who loves worms

Well, I cut up carrots and veggies for my bearded dragon in addition to his crickets. The dog will get an egg or ice cream every once in a while while.

My cat wouldn't appreciate it anyway. Store bought all the way!

Well ok my cats think that if I have cooked a meal then they are part of the family so they should get their fair share...and they manage to get it too!

The home made pet food started as a response to pet food manufacturers who were loading spoiled meat with antibiotics in order to not make animals sick but feed them garbage. "People food" is usually a euphemism for unspoiled and healthy food so it's pretty good for animals too. Now processed food will not be nutritious for animals anymore than it is for humans but it's fairly easy to be sure your pet has a balanced diet and never buy them prepackaged food.

Wild animals given easy food are a problem but pets MUST be given a proper diet since they are not expected to develop the skills to fend for themselves.
That being said as long as you buy good food for your pet they can be healthy and happy on kibble. Your local vet can advise about the better brands as well as what nutrients your pet may be lacking in its diet.

I prepare food for my dog as he has a special diet. I honestly see nothing wrong with it if you have the time to commit to it.
01/11/2013
we feed our dog dry dog food but also give him left overs.
01/11/2013
My cats eat a healthier type of store bought food. If I could afford to I'd cook them meals all the time but it's just not doable right now.
01/11/2013
I feed my pet only store bought food.
01/11/2013
My chihuahua eats no table/human food at all. He eats strictly specialty dog food for chihuahuas.
01/11/2013
No, I do not cook for my cat, lol.
01/11/2013
I buy her food.
01/11/2013
No, my kitties are fine with their kibble.
01/11/2013
They get dog food, but they love my cooking,so I share some with them too.
01/11/2013
No I don't for my current pets. I did once live with a woman who made meals for her dog and cat. I learned And helped out. It was easy one third lean protein, one third carb and one third veggie is what the vet told her. She just made it in the crock pot in the morning and it was ready at night when we got home. The cat was 19 and healthy as a kitten so it must have helped!

My dog loves IAMS
01/11/2013
I buy my pooch's food from his vet. My dog has an extremely sensitive stomach and there is only one prescription dry dog food that works for him, and one darn 7.7 lbs bag cost $34.00!

I buy my food, but sometimes I like to feed my pet strawberries so I cut it up for her. But I've never cooked something specifically for my animals.
